By sheer chance I was looking at a LNER paint diagrams for an A4 the other day. Have to say I didnt pay to close attention but i may go back and compare it to them now.

I was not at this event, but judging by the results etc it was a most memorable one. Congratulations must go to all those involved in making it a resounding success, and I hope I'm right in picking out Martin for actually have the idea in the first place.

    Hello all,

attached you will find two more pictures taken on the day on the Saturday. The upper picture was the only way the general public could get all three A4s into one picture.

    Many thanks Ralph

The idea was being put forward by others before the A4's returned and Tony Streeter of Steam Railway fame was heavily involved . Delays in the shipping meant the proposed date was missed and that was where I asked the question . The rest as they say is now history

I've written it elsewhere but the staff at Locomotion were superb . Anthony Coulls , Pam Porter, Richard Pearson and George Muirhead all deserve a great big thankyou for the welcome they gave us both nights and for their enthusiasm for the idea. Wayne Bell of Durham Council Special events whose lights we used , John Cameron and the Support crew of 60009 were enthusiastic supporters and WCRC who really were amazingly supportive

Would I do it again , of course . Watch this space

One question that I have not seen posted anywhere.
When is the return date to the US and Canada?
How long have we got to see them?
I know they are destined for display at York and back to Shildon next year just wondering if there is a final date set yet.

I think they go back sometime in 2014. Not to sure when though. I think they said a final line up would be done before 60008 and 4489 go back.

Also great work by Martin and everyone getting all 3 Brunswick A4's together. I didn't go but a great acheivement. I'm looking forward to 3 Garter Blue A4's myself.

Shouldn't that be 4 ? 60007; 60010 restored; 4468 the exhibit and 60019 Bittern ? Adnmittedly different shades of blue perhaps but still basically blue.

There's still scope for a 60007,60008 and 60009 line up to be had as well as 4464,4468,4492.

personally I would like to see 60008 have the 1950's BR logo... AFAIK no A4 has carried this in green in preservation and it's meatier appearance would probably go down better in the US than the more modest 1960s one it currently carries.

    Hi all,
I went through to Shildon on the Saturday during normal opening hours to see the A4's. I could hardly believe they were there, but they were!
I would just like to say a big thanks to all involved in bringing them back over here, they are going to look spectacular when they are both restored!
It was nice to see U of S.A. running up and down, and that whistle sounds as ghostly as ever!
A few of my pics taken from my phone are here:

Correct, 60009 in the mid 1990's carried the Early Crest, Sir Nigel has also carried it but on BR Blue obviously.

As said 60009 has but it would be the first time in Preservation that a Non-Corridor A4 would have carried the Early Crest.

I wondered when somebody would bring up the question of liveries!

The only correct livery for the any of the surviving A4s, in their current condition (with the exception of 4468), is BR green with the later crest, as the Kylchap blastpipes and double chimneys were not fitted until 1957/58. No.10 is, of course, reverting to original condition but No.8 is not. When No.8 was presented to the Americans, in 1964, contemporary reports noted it being a very fine and accurate example of the class in its final form, which is to be expected, as it done at Doncaster.

All of that was undone, when the loco was renovated in 1990, for the centenary of Eisenhower's birth. I understand it was sand-blasted (hence why all the dents as rivet-heads now show) and resprayed in a 'brunswick' bluey-green, together with the red buffers and silver-painted motion, amongst others.

Having released it for display over here, in part, in return for its renovation, a museum should expect its return to be in as accurate correct condition as can be achieved - the earlier BR emblem would not achieve that. No.8 was, of course, a gift from BR to the Americans and, as such, its condition at the time of the presentation is part of its history.

PS As has been noted earlier, No.9 did carry the earlier emblem, in the mid-1990s, when it was under the care of the SVR, but I think Mr Cameron prefers the current livery!

I think most people let the double chimney/kylchap mod on A4's go when talking about liveries as asthetically, it makes virtually no difference, compared with the difference between say A3's in single and double mode.

Despite various mods to the loco since LNER days, I'd love to see Bittern as one of the Silver Jubilee A4's again but in steam this time.

If we're going into liveries, how about 60008 into wartime black to pair with the Eisenhower WW2 command train?

(and taking off the Eisenhower name plates as well, i know...)

Assuming you don't split BR Green into Early and Later Crest that livery - approx 1952 to 1964.

LNER Blue was approx 46-49 (3 years)

    BR Blue 49-52 (3 years)

    Early crest 52-58 (6 years)

    Later crest 58-64 (6 years)

Someone may have better dates to hand, if not I can get them from a book at home tonight.
