    I beg to differ,

Yesterday London had 4 steam tours, only 60009 didn't have a diesel on the rear.
    34067 had 47500
    60163 had a 67 (steam dreams)
    35028 had 67025 (vsoe)
I wish they would use more preserved diesels, 47580 was always popular to see in large logo blue.
it would be nice if 47500 was returned to GW150 green and maybe a 40, 42, 35, 45,46, 50, 52 etc would be nice.

For those who don't want a diesel on the back, the solution is relatively simple... Take off 5 coaches, have a generator van and a network of thunderbird diesels... £300-600 a ticket anyone ?

Can I just ask, without knowing full the itineries, were there good reason's for 35028 and 60163 having tailgunners ?, I suspect 35028 had it for a bank out of Victoria and possible help with what's afterall regularly the heaviest charter around, as well as a back up to the genny van on what's afterall an expensive dining service, did 60163 have a shunt or other requirement ?.

According to the thread for the Tornado trip the diesel was on the back from Southend to Acton Yard. Tornado came off at Acton on the return and the Diesel took the tour back to Southend.

Just stumbled on the heating debate in this thread. Unless someone at the back says they were cold on the Lindum Fayre, it looked to me that the steam heat was working well (and not too well either). The Class 47 stayed in London.

I got shot down on this a few weeks back for suggesting the vsoe always has a diesel, so.. a quick look at my photo archives the last few years... I've photted the vsoe over 20 times, only 2 were without a diesel after clapham.
maybe it's just me, but that seems to be the norm for what I photograph.

DL in the winter is normal practice on the OE Pullman plus the Oxford trips.

The VSOE always has a 67 on the back, or at least has all the time I've seen it recently bar once in March this year. Apparently even the FGW Turbos have been having problems with adhesion on the Shalford to Reigate section in recent weeks, so it may be that they just don't want to take any chances. Plus the 67 is required for the shunt moves at Victoria either end, so it's probably easier to keep it on than shunt on and off at each end in the throat of one of the busiest London terminii.

So the steam heat appears to be working well on 60009's rake (unless someone says otherwise), not sure how that helps 34067's rake mind, the decision might not be one WCRC make across the board, maybe more dependent on the condition of which coaches are used.

What I'm saying is, how do we know a vehicle(s) in 34067's rake didn't have defective steam heat but functioning ETH ?, a look at all the tours out yesterday shows there was an awful lot of coaches in service, some vehicles which on quieter days would of stayed on the depot for attention, may of had to be pressed into service.

Gents, I think there's a slight difference here with the tone of the 47 in both video's but any excuse to have ago I guess.

The first video at Shoreham shows the 47 powering up for sure but I wouldn't say it was done with any great enthusiasm so it may only be opening up to take it's own weight as you clearly see the driver opening Tangmere up a few seconds earlier in the video.

Now James' video from Fareham looks different, the 47 is definitely helping there but it may have been at the request of the driver on Tangmere or other unknown factors, who knows?

It may have been agreed that the diesel would take it's own weight if the speed dropped below a certain figure or after each TSR check. At least the passengers that travelled got there and back ok though and they stayed warm.

I'd also hope that most people would be able to tell the difference in the 47's tone but clearly not!

I'll just repeat my message from yesterday evening. This was more than a quick shove out of Bristol Temple Meads. Keynsham is over five miles from Bristol. I can assure you that the diesel was much louder than the steam engine. <BJ>

IMHO it seems to me that when a DL is on the back of a train and it's a DBS charter, the use of it to provide power is rare and on request. With West Coast it seems to be a different matter. whatever is up front. As we are not privy to the conversations between the footplate and diesel driver all we can do is speculate on the reasons. So let's just shut up and get over it.

Agree totally, but this one will run and run I'm afraid, due to the emotive nature of the debate. As I've said already, I agree with the use of a diesel in this way if considered appropriate by those involved in the train's operation as they will always be privy to more info than we will. My main gripe with this tour and others being run by RTC / WCRC is that they have made this decision in advance, (the right one in my view), but not seen fit to make it known at the time of advertising the trains to allow those considering booking, to make an informed choice.

I don't see why you think the conditions were wrong for that shot. I'd have thought they were perfect: clear sky, low sun and no wind. The steam trail is picked out by the strong back-lighting. On a duller day, you'd just have shades of grey, wouldn't you? If I'd have thought of it, I might have been up there with you. The problem is that the tripod is not steady and smooth enough for such an extreme telephoto shot. Without investing in something much bigger and heavier (more than you normally need or want to carry?), a better option is a series of static shots with the moves edited out.
