It had to happen! Now where did this idea of a Strategic Reserve originate in the first place? Steam Railway if I remember correctly.

Couldn't resist it...! Don't most half-baked stories originate in the Beano; makes a change that in this one they appear to be the party who've actually tried to ascertain the facts!

No, I think myths about the Strategic Reserve predate "Old Wilcox's Almanac" etc. Of course, we really do have a Strategic Reserve these days, stored and maintained in working order at almost no cost to the taxpayer at places like Ropley, Bridgenorth, Grosmont, Carnforth, etc. ;-)

The stories about a "strategic reserve" started before the end of steam. A retired B.R fitter friend told me that a number of low-mileage Black 5's and 8F's had been identified and put on one side at Edge Hill depot. The plan apparently was to put them into the Crown St. tunnels and brick up the entrances. I think this probably had a bit more to it than S.R.'s version - at Rhydymwyn? Obviously it never happened but it would be interesting to know if it was ever seriously contemplated by H.M.gov. Apologies if this is a bit "off topic". Ray.
