I've found some railway workings during that Winter on Youtube.
    Snow (1963) - YouTube
It starts with diesel and then shows steam. You may also want to view the other film clips to the right of the screen and read the comments below the film clip.

Amazing! A 5XP and Turbomotive still in LMS red in 1963!

But God, I remember that winter! And the clipshows the shear human effort that was put in to keeping the traffic moving. So much like today...

And, of course, we have one of the hero locomotives from "Snowdrift at Bleath Gill" still with us today :) . Isn't one of the NER snowploughs seen in the film still extant too?

Certainly looked like the Turbomotive (what other 6-coupled loco had just coupling rods and what looks like a Stanier-pattern trailing truck? - it flashes by, but see e.g. 6'52"). But - the Turbomotive was long gone by 1963! So I guess they must have spliced in some older film. Seems odd, though, of all the clips they could use, to use that!

I'm impressed by the chaps shifting snow early in the film - without gloves. But maybe I'm just a soft southerner...

Indeed: York Area Group. A leading light in its restoration is a frequent contributor on this forum, I believe.

Indeed it is - nothing to do with me, I hasten to add, I just posted the link!

There is a sister plough (No. 20) at Shildon.

Tom and Mark Thanks for the comments and yes No 18 is one of the 2 ploughs in the film.
The other steel bodied plough didn't survive, although it did continue in service until about 1974 like mine.

What I want to know, Bryan, is if you'll let us use it? How much could we charge for a photo charter pushing that into a big drift? :rapture:

Yeah right! One drop of rain & the whole network grinds to a halt. God forbid if WW3 ever broke out.

No problem at all from me.
You provide the drift and the Q6 (or something North Eastern) and I will provide the plough.

But I don't think you will get this one again.
