    RailPictureLibrary | 2885 to be lifted out of Moor Street station on January 13

    It is envisaged that cosmetically restored Great Western 2885 will be craned out of Birmingham Moor Street station, weather permitting, on the night of 12/13 January .


    its initial destination is thought to be Tyseley.

    Looks like it will need to be a fairly big crane.
    What is the weight of the engine alone?
    75t 10c for the Engine + Tender according to my old spotters book.
    Rough guess 65Ton at a radius of about 30 metre so that will mean something like a 9 axle Demag or Liebherr 500 tonner.

    Well, both of my Ian Allan ABC (1952 and 1963) give it as 76t 5c for the loco (remember this is a 2884 class) and 40t for tender.

    That's in full working order. At the moment it lacks coal, water and a few add-ons, such as injectors, pipework, etc.

    It'll certainly need something approaching 400-500 tons, though.

    It was craned in to begin with - platform 5 is not rail connected. This is the second attempt to extract it after last June when the lift was cancelled at very late notice.

    It has new owners that want to restore it to working order I think - possibly at Tyseley LW.

    Being a regular commuter into Moor st. The new layout into P3 and P4 doesnt allow P5 to be reconnected.
    But as campainr says, It has new owners. Cant restore it on Moor street station can they.

    Going slightly OT, what happened to the Moor Street traverser and was it unique at a station in this country? I'm guessing that it went to the scrapman.

    Pity really as the Moor St terminus isn't much use for charters dspite the water tower and columns, no run round facility, but the big headache is you can only fit a a loco on load 8 between the buffers and starting signal.

    But fine for charters where the set and loco already on the front are brought in from Tyseley by a diesel.

    Unfortunately the column is in the wrong place for anything on anymore than 6 coaches. The tank sits empty and I dont think is actually connected. Such a shame especially when Bridgnorth needs a new/ second water tank :eyebrows:

    Well judging what happened to King Edward II in the fish dock at BTM, its certainly not adviseble!

    Re Traverser, there was one at the head shunt at Paddington up till the 1920s. I think the Moor street one was a bit larger to carry tender engines wasnt it? The paddington one as I recall was only large enough to move saddle tanks.

    Thanks for that on the new owners btw.

    Problem is anything larger than a Pannier and you have to knock a coach off for a loco either end so your down to load 7, including support and non passenger vehicles, I doubt anyone but VT would be able to make such a load viable financially, the opening special which was 9600 + load 8 + 5043 really didn't have much space at all between the stops and starter, it's that stabling point Chiltern installed on the viaduct has made the station throat a lot more compressed than it should be, the Stabling point I understand would have to come out if the Camp Hill chord at Bordesley and services over that line ever come to fruition.

    I seem to recall reading the Traverser could take anything up to a Castle, they were not unknown on Moor St arrivals occasionally to relieve pressure on Snow Hill.

    I would imagine an overnight possession probably Sat - Sun as that would give the most train free time and least road traffic as the crane would be stood on that road.
