Reading Heritage Railway mag over the weekend. There is an article about 71000 being moved in to Eastleigh works for storage. What I don't understand is why did someone think they need six coaches for extra braking force just to move one loco in to the works. Over the years I've seen plenty of locos being moved about without the need to add extra vehicle put in to the move to add extra braking force.

    Thanks

That seems a little odd. All they needed for braking was really the support coach and a loco acting as a shunter.

Never mind, at least she's out of the rain and frost now, and so will be anyone working on her. How close is she to Canadian Pacific? That would make a good picture...

Sounds like either the brake system on the locomotive was unserviable or (more likely) incompatable with the loco that was hauling it, or someone had taken the opportunity to add several vehicles to make the move more economical.

Even though 71000 is capable of hauling air braked coaches, the brakes on the locomotive itself could still be vacuum. Therefore if the hauling loco could only provide air or the trailing vehicles were not vacuum fitted, 71000 would 'through piped' with the sufficient number of brake vehicles behind it to stop if there was a runaway. "White Pages" (the freight operating manual) publishes a procedure for calculating the number of vehicles required to accompany an unbraked vehicle - so in accordance with the Rule Book the formation would be determined by calculation not judgement.

BR standard locos and tenders have steam brakes. No steam = no brakes

The loco is within the secure confines of the former Eastleigh Locomotive Works
where a preliminary examination has identified problems with the Caprotti
mechanism as well as other areas where remedial work is required including
the remetalling of crossheads. Due to operational and commercial requirements
the Trustees are currently investigating the possibility of moving to a second
operational base in the south of England subject to the conclusion of satisfactory
negotiations. The Nene Valley Railway is one of the chosen options.

The Trustees have a long term commitment to maintaining close connections
and an operating base on the East Lancashire Railway. It is not yet decided
whether the outstanding repairs will be carried out at Eastleigh or an alternative site.

71000 and support coach are sat outside Eastleigh works building, right next to the Hedge End line at 07:37!

    Anyone know why it's there?

In the engineering report published last Tuesday it said it was going to "be returned to its home base to enable the remediation of identified issues and further examination of valves, camboxes and drive train to try to identify any defect that could have caused the irregularities or eliminate them and give them a clear bill of health. Adequate running in testing will then be needed to give confidence for return to main line service."

I'd therefore guess that it's going to be towed home to the ELR in the near future.

Do those long(long enough?) travel exhaust valves run a bit hot on the middle cylinder and get a bit sticky with all those high speed heavy loads, or is it with temperature variability? Sounds like it was never run in in BR days and needs a post build modification. Maybe some monitoring sensors for temp and movement on all those valves might yield the answer perhaps on a workbench? I don't have the full details of problem but have been applying brain to Caprotti recently...

An interesting theory. Certainly it appears that the locomotive is now producing much higher sustained power outputs than she ever achieved when first in service. The extra heat thus generated has to go somewhere...

Hello there, indeed an interesting theory but the current problems are unrelated to what you theorize. However Sticking valves do occur. Although it is fairly rare and in past experience has never been down to temperature. Do not forget that the valves themselves are hollow center so once they come off the seat steam can flow very freely and quickly past the valve, thus long travel (giving a greater opening between valve seat and cage) is not really necessary.

I was told from a source at ELR the dukes engineers were at some sort of meeting last weekend, can anybody back this up and say what may happen next? The website is a dead end.If any of the trust membership are reading this do you have any answers?

Cylinder lubrication was not apparently too clever on the larger standards, but worn cylinders/ piston rings doesnt seem to be an
issue with 71000, so perhaps this has been put right... im thinking along the lines of ports getting ' gunged' up with deposits causing valves to stick ?

Is the Duke going to be in Crewe for repairs only or does the society want to do an early overhaul?
