    Re: LU 150 plans...

I am heading out this Sunday to see the special shuttles. However, I can only see the lunchtime operation.
Forgive me if this has already been asked but on the Uksteam info site there is also a 9.55am departure from Kenny O which doesn't seem to be mentioned elsewhere. I was also hoping to see this run but wondered if this was still operating?

I'm fairly certain the morning run is happening, but it's a private staff-only trip.

From what's been said elsewhere the 09:55 train will be the commemorative service - this should get to Edgware Road at quarter past 10, terminating at Moorgate fifteen minutes later. This explains the return service at noon behind Sarah Siddons.

Probably fewer than you think, so many drivers these days do not see what is going on around them. Case in point, a couple of years back I was following a friend up the M6 one evening, as we approached bridge under the Manchester Crewe line, 6233 went over, he and the other two in his car never even saw it.....

    Dont need to be driving..

I was at Denmark Hill a few weeks back when 60163 came through, watching my video afterwards.. I saw a guy walk to the platform, open his paper and read it.. without even noticing Tornado sounding it's whistle and opening the regulator for the climb.. oblivious to the world he was... that or he's seen it some many times before he'd lost interest.

Perhaps, but I bet everyone turns their head, on every Underground platform when a steam train rattles through this weekend, because it will be hard not recognise the significance. It may be expensive, but there is every reason, this event seperates the trainspotters from the people who want to be part of a historical event I would much rather be there than travelling behind pretend history.

I'd be interested to read your definition of that.

I'd be interested in reading that too, but it's worth remembering that mainline steam, especially in the south east, is quite a common sight these days, so possibly not all that surprising that not everybody on platforms etc, acknowledges it as it goes by.

In the case of LU150 it'll be the first time a steam train has been seen during service hours, for many years, so is bound to attract more attention I'd say. There will always be some cut off from the rest of society, but I would suggest it was ever thus !

    Re: LU 150 plans...

Of course, 'Pretend History' is meaningless - if the idea was to belittle the regular forays onto the main line by steam by implying that it's somehow fake or frivolous, then that's overlooking the huge efforts put in by the people concerned, not least to overcome a regime that stacks the odds against running such trains. The very fact that steam has become so relatively common on the system today is amazing. The LU150 trips are no more or less 'real' history than any other steam trips around the country (or, for that matter, events of any kind!).
Of course, some events are of a unique type, which makes them stand out from the more regular operations, but that shouldn't detract from 'everyday' main line steam.
By the way, I think that the wearing of earphones these days is so common that many do not hear steam sounds and/or are oblivious to the activities around them when they are engrossed in their personal audio, which may account for at least some of the cases of bystanders failing to acknowledge these workings.

Not only wearing headphones, but staring at smartphone, and tablet screens is increasingly common, so no wonder many are oblivious to the world around them. They are in one of their own ! These people miss more than just the passing steam train of course.

LU150 is special of course. If it wasn't the demand for tickets wouldn't have been what it was, despite the premium fares being charged.

I think the point he's trying to make is that 60163 is not from the steam age as we know it, Can't say I recall seeing any rule saying history ended after 1968 personally.

Steam is still making history.. it didnt stop in 1968, it changed.
LUL 150 is a page in that history starting this weekend.

60163 isnt pretending history.. it is making history, who knows in 50-70 years time it may be requested to be part of the national collection for history it has made in it's own right.

I've not seen anything to suggest otherwise - for anyone interested in a a rare chance to see steam on the District during normal operating hours it will leave Ealing Common at 22:04, pass Acton Town at 22:07, Hammersmith at 22:21 and finally West Kensington at 22:24.
