    Hi does anyone know the wereabouts of the steam roller Pendle Witch and what condition it is in?

    I have a steam roller called Pendle Witch. Its and Aveling & Porter no 8727, built 1916 for Morecambe Council then passed to Walton Le Dale council. It was then sold to Tom Varley of Gisburn Lancashire in 1969 were he named it Pendle Witch, he used to name all his engines with "pendle" ie "Pendle Witch", "Pendle Maid", "Pendle Queen" etc

    Its currently under full restoration

    Heres a pic of it at Tom Varleys were you can see the "witch" part of the name on the canopy. Its the one in the background, not the one described in the picture.

    What work are you doing to her? box barrell etc I guess??

    Is that a KND or a GND? I can never remember which is which. My roller is a BTD with a GND block.

    It had a new firebox in 1984 but wasn't very well done, so I've removed the box to do some building up on the throatplate and backhead. Currently removing front tube plate to build up the bottom of the barrell. Would love to have a go on an Aveling Tractor.

    Its a KND (colonial type - the same as "Clementine")

    As you know some engines were fitted with "biscuit tin boxes" and done on a budget to get them back on the road. Its amazing how many people fit boxes but never tackle the backheads and throatplates at the same time.

    If you are ever in essex your more than welcome to call in and see us and our toys and have a play/ drive. We also have a Aveling 10 ton single (8837) up the yard.

    You hit the nail on the head there. It was a rush job, box was chucked in and then the foundation ring welded in because it was such a bad job. Backhead and throatplates were coated with the roughest weld you have ever seen. Doing it properly this time. Although I am a bit impatient and want to get it going, I only want to do it once, not again in 20 years.

    Do you take your engines to Dorset, there having a special roller event this year which I'm sure you've heard about.
