    Re: LE Movements

I'd be surprised if a single broken chair would cause a lightly loaded coach axle to derail. Broken chairs happen all the time, we'd be knee deep in derailments if this were the case.

What's interesting is the way the coach has moved sideways 1) it's lucky it went that way (so long as it's wasn't fouling the adjacent line) and not the other way into the platform edge thus causing damage 2) I assume it wasn't buckeyed to the tender - if it was then to get to that position would the buckeye have released somehow or else sustained damage?

    Re: LE Movements

But if 100+tons of gallumphing A4 had just been over it, rather than the lecky or diesely things, then the track *might* have moved enough to let the coach go walkies.

    Re: LE Movements

What concerns me about this, & the 47500 incident, is that they were relatively low speed incidents not involving passengers. What if they were running at normal line speed full of passengers? I dread to think!

Time will tell. Depends whether RAIB get involved as to whether we'll ever know - looks unlikely though I'd have thought.

Given the disruption caused, and the location of this incident, I'd be surprised if the RAIB didn't get involved.

You'll be surprised what they don't get involved with. If anyones been to Windermere in the last 3 years and wondered why the buffers have moved towards Booths will know what I'm on about.

    Re: LE Movements

Ordsall Curve and York Plat 10, you woulden't be going much more than 25MPH, though I share you concern that track like this appears to be on heavily used passenger sections, while those speeds are unlikely to cause any serious injury, a derailment is still a derailment and the disruption is brings.

I do rather hope track on higher speed sections is in better shape, but it does shake confidence in NR somewhat that minor things such as new tyres or a few more tons than normal can expose such flaws.

They were buckeyed together but the buckeyed are designed to move a fair bit for traveling over tight corners and points.

    Re: LE Movements

It is a bit simplistic to say that flange climb caused the Reading derailment. There was a twist fault within acceptable limits, but the load in the container had shifted. This affected the axle/wheel loads.

    Re: LE Movements

I did not say it was the cause.
I said it was a factor.

This may have contributed to a chain of circumstances which resulted in the derailment.

It's often the way - lots of little things, which on their own might not come to much, but combine them and you have a problem...

Thanks for that bit of info, missed that.

I see it is routed via Darwen, ok only a LE move but I haven't seen steam along there for a couple of years.

Suppose there is a vague chance 45699 might go as far as Hellifield for a light test as well.
