Does anybody have any copies of the operating instructions 'Load's of passenger trains'? I'm mainly interested in 50's/60's for steam, but the versions for diesels would also be interesting. Please PM me if you have any information.

Hi Benji, welcome to the forum.

Just a quick question though, would your post happen to be asking "Loads for passenger trains" rather than "Loads of passenger trains".

Example: 5MT class loco is allowed x tons trailing load over Y route ?

If so I can edit the thread title for you.

    Neil.

Hi Neil, thanks for the response. I know it sounds wrong but it is definitely 'Loads of passenger trains'. I've got a photocopy of part of one and that is what is on the front cover.

I was curious as to your question, does this document relate to passenger numbers between stations or on routes, as with closure of the S&DJr
In other words it was the earning pay load, may include parcels, on many routes?

It gives the maximum load in tons for each route and power classification. They are an interesting read, but so unusual to see.

Can you post a scan or photo of what you have? Might get people on the right track.

This sounds to be the Train Loadings guides which were produced for both passenger and freight trains during BR days. In terms of passenger workings the tables were set for D280 [= 8 coaches @35 tons]; d350 [= 10 coaches @ 35 tons] and D450 [ = 12 coaches @ 35 tons] to show the times allotted for the routes according to power availabilty of Class 6 [Jubilee] Class 7 [Royal Scot / Patriot / Britannia ] or Class 8 [Duchess]. IIRC correctly there were also local tables geared to slower services whilst for freight I recall that maximum speeds were set over routes to take account of train weights and whether fully / partially braked.

As an added recollection I seem to recall that the tables were sometimes incorporated into Sectional Appendices which were issued for various areas. Although I recall reading them in signal-boxes which I (unofficially) worked during the late 1960s I recall that they were NOT stand-alone books but formed part of a larger book. Try checks on Sectional Appendices to see if they incorporate the information you are looking for.
