Just a quick bump to say that money is still available that can be doubled to help restore Sir Archibald Sinclair. Current figure stands at just under £30k to the project, about half what is needed, but a very welcome boost to finances.

Looks like the match funding has just run out. Final amount donated was £18,121, resulting in a total raised of £36,191. So a bit shy of what was hoped, but £36k towards the project is still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, so to speak. It seems some other charities were quicker off the mark on day one and two in using all the "Big Give" component of the match funding.

Donations can be still be made, but they won't be match-funded. Thanks to anyone here who has made a donation.

Breaking news: The Bluebell has obtained another £2,500 of match funding. So the challenge is back on, and the next £2,500 raised will also be doubled, which with any luck will put the total above £41,000. Later breaking news: For £2,500, read £7,500 and therefore the next £7,500 can be doubled - so the potential to be raised has gone up to £51,000, plus applicable gift aid.

The following was in the Bluebell fortnightly newsletter, and gives the latest on the fundraising:

It got off to a slow start on December 9th. We were unable to compete with many nationwide charities for the sponsor funding put up by Big Give itself, and indeed the first day's funding was exhausted in seven minutes!

However, the sponsor funding of £15,000 put up by our own supporters belongs solely to us, and I am pleased to say this was matched by your online donations earlier this week. Our profound thanks to all who have given! There's more good news: we have obtained a further £7,500 in sponsor funding from two of our major donors. Some £5,600 of this funding is still available to be matched online.

As of earlier today our overall total raised was £38,769 towards the original £60,000 target. We have also joined up with the Royal Air Force Association to appeal for donations, recognising Sir Archibald Sinclair's connection to the Battle of Britain. Even if we don't quite reach our original appeal target, we should just have sufficient funds to repair the locomotive in the New Year. We know you have given so generously to the Northern Extension Project this year, but we must ask for one final push to secure the services of an important locomotive for the extended Railway.

Please note that the challenge ends on 20th December; if match funding runs out, unmatched donations can be made up to this date.

From the Bluebell website:

The Big Give Christmas Challenge, raising funds for the boiler work on "Sir Archibald Sinclair" closed at 5pm yesterday. The total donated once matched was £43,726 against our target of £60,000. Due to the sterling efforts for the Battle of Britain Group the amount raised for this locomotive in 2012 totals £67,311, of which £20,756 has already been spent on components for the firebox. We hope that the remaining funds will be enough to get 34059 running again, but any further donations will be gratefully received, and although they won't be matched in the challenge, can still be made through their web site, or direct to the Bulleid Society.

So, a very great "Thank You" to the 300 people who donated to this appeal.

Incidentally, on a fundraising note: Going on those figures, the average online donation size is about £72, which is broadly similar to other online "campaigns" we have had, such as the DDD.

Steam Railway Magazine suggests she will be back this year along with 35006, 34027 and 34081.

What a pity SR didn't ask anyone from the 34081 team about her being back in traffic this year. We hope to have her done by the end of the year but there's a lot of work to do yet.

From the Bluebell newsletter:

Work has been progressing on No. 34059 "Sir Archibald Sinclair," with removal of fittings to enable the boiler to be removed from the loco. No. 34059 will very shortly be swapped with 21C123, so that work can continue in the loco shed, giving access to the west side. The principal work on the firebox is planned to commence once No. 847 has been reassembled, which is expected to happen by April.

Thanks Tom, confirms my thought that as much as we'd like to see 34059 back pulling service trains this year it's probably not going to happen. If the predicted nine months work of repairs is necessary then with it starting in April the loco won't be ready until January 2014 at the earliest. Still you never know the workshop guys might be able to pull a rabbit from the hat and have the loco ready for Giants Of Steam.

If I remember correctly, it's still at the MHR for potential repaint there.
