    Evening All,

A friend of mine lived in South Africa for some years and took lots of steam pictures whilst there. The SAR ones are now on Flickr and are well worth a look if South African steam is your thing. There are Garratts galore (both gauges), 25NCs, 19Ds, 24s, 15Fs and many other classes. But why not have a look yourself; I'm sure that you won't be disappointed :

A PS to my previous message. I have just realized that I have drawn your attention to John's Flickr pictures already. However, he has added quite a few since the last time I mentioned it, so it's still worth another look.

Interesting to note that when double heading with Garratts, they did not put them together, always a few wagons between.

The waggons in between are usually the auxilary water carriers. We heard them referred to as 'torpedos' when we were there in 1972 although we never saw two of them in use with one loco.

Not water carriers in this instance.

Interesting; not something that I remember seeing. On which line was this shot taken, and what class of Garratt is it? A GEA?

Hi Andy, yes that's what assumed was the reason.

    Evening All,

I have just uploaded a further batch of South African pictures to my Flickr site - including a shot of two Garratts double heading but with a timber wagon in between them. Despite me saying that I do not remember seeing Garratts double heading but separated by freight wagons! There are also some shots taken from the cab of a Garratt when I was privileged to have a footplate ride.

Anyway, this is the first pictures and, if anyone is interested in seeing the others, clicking on the picture will take you to them :

Hope that they are of interest.
