The railway website says this is 80002's last gala appearance, does anyone know when the boiler ticket expires?

Are they going to be a bit short soon? The Ivatt tank and LYR tender engine are both recently been withdrawn as well.

"City of Wells" and the S160 can't be all that far off completion, surely?

and 90733 is just about to hit the straps. so thats a big un, a medium and in the short term 1300 or the coal tank to do the small stuff ( dining trains/cream teas... )

Interesting that the three mainstays the tvr , the Ivatt 2 and the standard 4, all tanks. being replaced by two 8f's and a 4f all big tender engines

We have 80002, 43924 & 90733 until the end of May, which gives good rotation for the next 2 months.
Both 1054/1300 will not be at the Railway in this time as they are leaving for other pursuits.

Come end of May we will have only 43924/90733 which will leave us a little tight, however other locomotives are expected to arrive on the Railway in this time.

5820 is expected around Summer so that'll start to plug the gaps, then 34092 a little later on.
As we get towards the back end of the year 45212 will return from Overhaul at Rileys before going off on mainline work with him.

So yes & No. But in reality we did most of 2012 on two engines (both the class 4s) as 41241/957 could not haul more than 4 coaches, and we tended to run 5 or 6 on a weekend.

Thanks for filling us in there. 80002 will be greatly missed as she has been a solid performer for the last ten years going about her work with very little fuss. I've looked in the latest 5305 Locomotive Association newsletter and they state that they are expecting the Five to be based on the Worth Valley between main line commitments from March to September. Has there been anything else about this?

Was speaking to someone involved with KWVR about the shortage of loco's come end of May/beginning of June.

Be interesting what the Worth Valley get in the short term while the S160, the Black Five & City of Wells re-enter service later on in the year.

Is the Ivatt not that powerful then? At Swanage we use the M7 on six coaches, and technically she's a BR class 2 like the Ivatt.

The gradients at Swanage aren't quite as steep as Keighley. The Mid-Hants seem to limit their Ivatt tank to four coches, but in my experience as a passenger it copes with those pretty easily and could probably take at least one more without too much bother.

The Ivatt tank used to take 5 on the odd occaision, but saw the Ivatt Tender have to back down and least once and tread quite gingerly to get 5 out of Keighley ( steep, curved and greasey) on the weekend less weight on the wheels...

Was the steel fiebox fitted to 80002 a success at the KWVR or is it likely to revert to a copper one like 80135?

Another myth. OK, with a full tank and bunker, a Cl2 tank theoretically has all of 15 cwt more adhesive weight but that is all of 168 gallons or a few shovelfuls of coal.. The real difference is not having to drag a tender around. There's a 20 ton difference between the dead weight of the tank and tender locos.

To be fair, I've never seen anything make an "energetic" getaway from Keighley, even class 5's or above, it's a bugger of a start and really the limiting factor on what can be done.

This. Its a slog out of Keighley, and Ive never seen anything make a "quick" departure out of there. 90733 was spinning up with a load of 6 (7?) on Sunday.
Looking forward to seeing the S160 out and about again, but can't say Im a massive fan of the spamcan.

78019 even struggled with 5 on the Saturday. Even the steam heat bag between loco and the first coach blew apart (if that's the right way to put it).
