    Hello,

According to Bernard Rockett's Penrhyn Quarry book, Hunslet 0-4-0 'Pamela' is the same Large Quarry type as 'Hugh Napier', 'George Sholto' and 'Edward Sholto'. Having read around, it appears that she was rebuilt with the boiler from Bronllywd in the 1950s. Does this explain the different shape of the saddle tanks, as they appear to be fully curved, as opposed to the others of the class which curve over the top and then come to a straighter side?

    Regards,

    Ben

    Ben,

She does indeed have a Hudswell Clarke boiler hence her unconventional apperance. Bronllywd then used to carry the boiler from KS 'Stanhope' i believe, until re-built by Statford Barn to look original.

There is a bit more info here-

Bronllywd AFAIK only carried Stanhopes boiler in preservation, this was done a Bressingham and when they came to build a new boiler a few years ago they copied what was on it. Statfold placed a dome on this boiler to make Bronllywd look more authentic and I believe that it will have a 'proper' Hudswell boiler made when the current boiler reaches the end of its useful life.

Full details of the modifications to 'Pamela' were published in Y Llechen/The Slate (the PQRS journal) about 3 years ago. She also had an interim stage with Bronllwyd's boiler but not the cab.

Cliff Thomas does mention the new boiler and cab but wasn't aware of the middle state.
