Never fail to put on a show the Halls, well worth putting in the miles to hunt them down.

Seen here at Harltlebury on the out, and Pilning on the return.

    Morning all

Just to echo everyones comments, thank you to everyone for running yesterdays run. Another epic run with faultless running, friendly staff and company around. But mainly thank you's for the crews for prepping, driving and disposing both engines, must of been freezing last night and god knows what it felt like all the way to Gloucester in the snow. The snow was horizontal! I was ringing my balacarver out at Gloucester from the snow.

Also to the brave souls who photographed and videoed the run, I definetly remember seeing the green and white umbrella from the window, so thank you.

Highlights for me were mostly on the return, climbing to patchway from the severn tunnel was dealt in style. Pulling away from the slack at Ashchurch won't be forgotten, but sadly will as my mobile phone on vid mode decided to say "no".

Then the climb up Old Hill to top off the day. Most of us on board felt that was one of the quickest ascents up. Personnally it felt quicker than 5043 & 4965 on the return from Didcot a few years back. Be interesting if anyone on hear timed it.

    Couple of pictures below.

All the best, now to look forward to the Flyer!

And on that note, good luck to all for Thursday night's trial run.

    James

Two snaps from yesterday at Newport. The difference in tenders is quite striking when these Halls are together. An airy experience it would seem for Ray Poole on RAH. Halls 008.jpg Halls 005.jpg

From passing Cradley Heath to entering Old Hill Tunnel was 2min 37 sec, or 5 and three quarter minutes from Stourbridge North Junction, if you like. Min of 36 into the tunnel. It all seemed effortless - but we did have the equiv of 10MT up front.

BigA1 - interesting, I was discussing this climb with a gentleman in the opposite window to me, we came to the conclusoon that you'd sadly with the lie of line and its line speed of 40mph on the final bit I saw, have a quick ascent. Still, I always look forward to this last bit as a bit of an encore of a performance to round off a day.

Line speed of 40? Well, if you say so, but enough to say that we took the bank at a pace,

I noticed from Stourbridge, you have 15, 60, 50 then 40 on the last section, up into the tunnel, i assume it might rise back up to 60 after the summit but i didnt see any psr signs after the tunnel / I might of missed them. Don't get me wrong I'm not faulting the performance in the slightest, as soon as we cleared the 15 as you know, we accelerated up like anything

That just about summarises what the restrictions were and the crew, as they did throughout the day, managed the circumstances and track conditions/speed restrictions impeccably - as you might expect. That said, having been held at the junction way beyond the recovery time in the schedule, they had to do what they did to be right time by Snow Hill. That's clever.

Thanks for yours & VT efforts as well. Was a good day despite the weather, and all the stewards were as friendly as always. Good to have another chat with yourself too, though hope we didn't keep you out of the kitchen too long! Glad to have finally travelled behind a Hall on the mainline, though have to admit the pair didn't seem challenged that much and made it look easy at times. Still was a fun day out and look forward to my next trip with VT. Any chance of repeating this trip but including Swansea next time?

I do wonder if they hang back a bit to try and ensure they don't get stopped on the bank ?, with 3 stations on the bank it's a big risk if your too hot on the heels of the preceding 172, the train it front can't of got beyond Moor St when the pair were coming into Snow Hill so closed up after Rowley Regis.

48773 did that a few years ago, when it should've piloted 6024 up Old Hill. I think it was Ray Churchill driving, and we slowed right down to a crawl through Stourbridge Junc then stormed up the bank.

Happens when heading to Plymouth too, gently past Teignmouth to linespeed at Aller Junction.

You mean to say people actually use Pilning? Anyway, a good day out to see some friends I hadn't seen in some time, some pretty good running within the tolerances of the 60MPH and other speed restrictions associated with gauging, whilst the 4 mins 53 secs (+/- 5 secs) through the Severn Tunnel was pretty close to normal service times. I can now say I've had 200 yards more haulage by Kinlet Hall than by Rood Ashton Hall! My friend took advantage of the ad-hoc stop at Snow Hill while I carried on to get my money's worth.

The gentleman in the red jacket had just got off the train from Bristol to cheers from photographers and others. The service train left the station as the Halls were sighted. The odd thing is that there are signs in the car park prohibiting parking.
