Re: Bahamas...full steam aheadfor bid to restore classic engine

Thanks for all your favourable comments about our efforts to get 45596 operational again. In the few weeks since we heard that our plans had received a Round One pass we have now completed and submitted our full bid even thouigh we were gived two years to send it in. No further news now until Q1 next year but if we get approval then by this time next year its overhaul should be well onthe way. Fingers crossed!
In the meantime and if you feel able why not vote for the Coal Tank in the SR/HRA Award competition? Votes need to be in by 31 December.

Re: Bahamas...full steam aheadfor bid to restore classic engine

Thanks for your comments. It is indeed good news; we appreciate the support of many countless individuals and supporters in helping us achieve this result. The REAL work now begins!
We are committed to maintaining our fundraising for 45596. Details of Steam's Last Blast Appeal are on our website. we have no major benefactor.
The bid involves much more than 'just' the restoration of BAHAMAS and full details will be published in due course.
The engine will leave York on 16 April and return to Ingrow; it will be on display on 18 May.
If you are able to help our project in any way please contact me; jrh@johnhillier.co.uk
Later in the year look out for 'The Yorkshire Jubilee' beer which is being produced by the Great Yorkshire Brewery to support the projecct!

This is indeed good news for many reasons, the thought of potentially 3 Jubs out is breathtanking, furthermore the most important think for us all to recognise is that despite two protracted and delayed high profile restorations that are lottery aided, the Lottery people still see that a well presented planned and costed proposal in the hands of people with a good track record (the coal tank) will be treated as an idividual case and the thinking has not been tarnished due to the failings of others.

super job. well done, and i look forward to hearing it again ( once you have seen one jub you have seen them all but the noise, it is all about the noise)

Re: Bahamas...full steam aheadfor bid to restore classic engine

As someone involved with Dinting as a BLS member in the late '60's early '70's when I lived in North Derbyshire, most heartening to hear of this Lottery success. However as John mentions, there must be much more to this bid than just restoring 5596, ie some educational aspect? Because as I understood the situation it is very very difficult to get Lottery money "just" for a loco overhaul nowadays, so the Bahamas people must have come up with something different and compelling that has swung the decision their way.

We really are going to be spoilt for choice with ex-LMS motive power over the S & C in a few years time! ( Just need someone to offer the NRM the money to overhaul the Midland Compound.....)

Anyway, brilliant news, and I wonder if it is known as yet where the overhaul is to take place, at Ingrow, or with an outside contractor?

    Regards

Good news .... I hope and have faith that this one will be lottery money spent wisely! Lets face it there have been some good uses of lottery money and some that haven't gone so well. And I'm not referring specifically to any projects in particular!!

You're quite right with your observations.......there are peripheral benefits from this restoration in the form of extra employment, education and others, in all a very innovative job has been done on this grant, so again ...well done, a well thought out application......

Hopefully some of the wise counsel arising from the Scotsman reports will be heeded before too many get their snouts in the trough having seen the £ signs.

Has a work plan been drawn up by the BLS? Would be interesting to see their plan of attack on the overhaul!

Re: Bahamas...full steam aheadfor bid to restore classic engine

Might i suggest that anyone wanting to see the full press release looks at the HLF website, Yorkshire & Humberside. The total award is £905,800 (including the BLS contributioin of £130k) and covers the overhaul of 45596, the renovation of our LMS Riding Van currently in store at Oakworth into an Education & Exhibition Resource Centre to be sited in the dock between our building at Ingrow and Ingrow Station plus the employment of an Audience Development Co-ordinator for the duration of the project. We are obviously mindful that some may see the £ signs but we obtained and had to present quotes to support our bid proposals. We do not therefore have £900k available to overhaul 45596!

Re: Bahamas...full steam aheadfor bid to restore classic engine

I have just seen that question. I had to submit a very detailed proposed work schedule to the HLF! Believe me it is a very rigorous process which it should be given that the lottery funding comes from the public. For commercioal reasons I am not going to comment yet on who our chosen contractor will be to do most of the work but the overhaul of the tender and other parts will be undertaken at Ingrow.

Having personally applied and been successful for R&D/innovation grants, I can confirm......they don't just hand money over........it's a very rigorous grilling you get....you have to justify everything and back it up with figures.

What's one of them when it's at home (and when are you advertising for it)?
