Still in the shed, the bodywork team have been working flat out over the past few weeks, you can see all the filling/sanding that's been done ready for painting in the near future. I also observed that the ends and gutter have been painted black.

Seen a photo of the GUV today, just been sprayed in red, looks brilliant still in the C& W shed with all the masking tap on.

Have seen the GUV in the yard looks real good but was amazed that its standing there without any windows in. Are they due to go in shortly?

Yes, windows, roof vents and door glass/fittings/handles are all on there way to re installation, which will make the vehicle watertight.

Then after a few (quick) jobs internally the vehicle will be complete.

Hows the GUV coming along, have all the windows been fitted and has the interior been repainted. Will this be displayed in Cheddleton yard when finished.

The handrails and door fittings have now been fitted as have the roof vents and gutter strips. The end doors have also been completed. The chalk boards which go on the ends of the vehicle were in the process of being made, but I've not been down for a few weeks so these may well be on by now.

Just the glass (on order) and interior paint (ditto) left now!

Chris, will the GUV be completed and on display at the Steam Gala at the end of February?

Hopefully, as the vehicle has very nearly been completed externally (windows are currently in the process of being fitted).

Quick update: all of the windows (bodysides & door droplights) have now been fitted so the vehicle is finally fully watertight. The chalk boards and spring clips (for the wagon style labels) are also now on. The interior ceiling and sides have also been painted into original white and bauxite respectively.

The steam heat through-pipe in in the process of being reinstated and work has started on reassembly of the woodwork on the insides of the four doors.

After that we will finish off with the vehicle lettering, floor repaint and reinstatement of some last fittings such as the door handles, interior window bars and ventilation grills.

The GUV looked superb yesterday in the rake of the parcels train pulled by the N7. Great job on the restoration done by the DMU group. Hope it's not long before we see it in a passenger rake.

The Birmingham Railcar Workgroup are pleased to announce that the freshly restored prototype mark 1 General Utility Van W86500 will be in service as a “tail load” behind Class 104/110 3-car set at the Churnet Valley Railway on Sunday 5[SUP]th[/SUP] May. A Cauldon Lowe steam service is also running and normal fares apply. Photographers and travellers alike are welcome to record this recreation of an often forgotten practice of the 1960’s railway. More information on the day is available at www.brcw.co.uk/tail-load-day.
