Thanks for all the replies re smokebox numbers guys. I'd been wondering about the 'SPL' headcode I've seen before too so thanks for that Des. Al, you're right, someone has really thought about presenting 34067 in an authentic way for this trip.

I agree Al - many steam tours don't have that extra bit of authenticity and whilst most punters won't know the difference, it is nice when the detail is accurate. (I remember a charter with the M7 some years back when it was insisted that a lamp be carried on the top bracket instead of the correct white disc on the bottom middle position! but I digress)

I agree the little touches on the front of the loco add so much, GWR Passenger loco's smokeboxes always look better wearing the massive 3 digit reporting numbers to me.

So Buseng how long do you think any railtour operator would survive with your line on compensation ?? It's a marginal business at best which is why we've seen the likes of Pathfinder, Past Time , Days Out , Kingfisher all suffer financially over the last few years . I'm still waiting for Tbird tours and I'm looking forward to seeing your foray into the railtour business

Every year we have this , cast your minds back to May last year with 5043 and Diesel around Scotland . No railtour operator would want an April Ban (who knows what our climate will throw at us) but equally it cannot be beyond the Network Rail team to keep a simple watching brief on lineside conditions and take an advanced view . There is video of 5043 yesterday on the climb to Ardley Tunnel and she is being worked quite hard, but evidence of firing only at the last into the tunnel and yet as the smoke clears a large grassy embankment is smouldering . A short while later and its well ablaze.

Ultimately its about sensible management not a myriad of rules and regulations and opportunities for the legal profession to profit

A general email of apology to passengers doesn't cost..... Not compensation but it would be nice. we never ask for actual money back but even a 10 quid voucher would be adequate, even if it was just for tours with the same route or loco.

People who ask for all their money back or full worth in vouchers is extreme IMO.

By his own admission, buseng hasn't been on a mainline steam tour for many, many years, and doesn't intend to do so again, so his views on what the tour operator "should of" done should not be given much weight. I'll be much more interested to read Hatherton Hall's comments, since it appears from his postings that he did go on the tour today, rather that asking for a refund or credit note. I hope that he, and the other passengers, have had an enjoyable day out despite the frustrations heaped on this tour, and that RTC will offer them all some incentives to book on another tour in the future.

From my point-of-view at the lineside, Tangmere made a fine sight in the Wiltshire countryside, glinting in the sun and with all the right adornments on the front (thanks chaps for explaining the significance of the various reporting numbers, etc.) I feel the stills photographers will have produced more pleasing results today than us videographers, though, because of the assistance from the 57 at the rear. Although a 57 is less noisy than a 37 or 47, it's still quite noticeable, especially when Tangmere was so quiet.

Digressing way off topic but yesterday I stood on Eardington Bank and enjoyed , the sight , sound and diesel free spectacle of 34007 at a good chat on an 8 coach rake

Who are you, an English teacher? Sorry if my grammar is not up to your high standards, we can't be all be perfect.
Where does it say in the forum rules that your grammar has to be spot on?

Don't forget the companies did not only deal with steam tours. So you you can't just blame the steam side for their problems.
What's all this comparison with TBF all about anyway? I'm nothing like him (no offence to him by the way).
Funny two mods have decided have a go at my remarks as well (mods hat off or otherwise).

While Days Out had gone really before I seriously started going on tours so can't speak for them, I don't recall Past Time running very many non steam tours, certainly not to the extent say Pathfinder do anyway (when were they in trouble ?, I must of missed that).

So i should blindly accept your comments and cannot have an opinion because I am a moderator, and just because I disagree I'm having a go rather than having a different opinion .

The effort would be nice. Particularly if you're going to write drivel.

For once I agree with you buseng. One of the most irritating things is people "correcting" someone else's grammar because it is "wrong". I will says what I want whichever ways I want to say it and put apostrophe's in all the wrong place's. Although I will do my best to make less mistake's....................

The purpose of language is to convey meaning. So long as you convey correctly what you intended to your audience, it doesn't matter how you said it!
