I am after a document which gives the allowable diameter differences between locomotive wheels also the new and scrap dimensions. I know this document did exist, and thought it was MT288. Sadly I can not find it on the RSSB website, which only mentions allowable dimensions should be in the Vehicle Maintenance Document, which I do not have access to. Thanks in advance

That BR document has long been superceeded and is no longer used by the industry. RSSB don't own the copyright on BRs old documents as this has passed onto RDDS (Serco) and only "ex BR" companies can by buy these. For example Freightliner can buy a document or drawing but non ex BR companies such as GBRF or a heritage outfit cannot.

RSSB own wheelset documents are: -

GM/RT2466 is the Railway Group Standards for wheelsets.

    This has supporting documents
GM/RC2494 "Recommendations for Railway Wheelsets Design"
GM/RC2495 "Recommendations for Railway Wheelset Manufacture and Assembly"
GM/RC2496 "Recommendations for Railway Wheelset Maintenance"
GM/GN2497 "Guidance on Railway Wheelset Tread, Gauging and Damage Identification"
GM/GN2498 "Guidance on Wheelset Handling, Storage and Transportation"

However these will not specify the limits as it is legally up to the Operator to specify these under ROGS based upon the manufactures information and any subsequent risk assessment to deviate from it (for example class 47 freight operators used to run to a smaller scrap diameter than passenger operators with a reduced speed)

MT 288 will only give you a list of documents that have been written or changed. VMIs for wheels should be in accordance with MT 288.

The document you require is as below.

    http://www.rgsonline.co.uk/Railway_Group_Standards/Rolling Stock/Other/GMTT0089 Iss 1.pdf

Hope that comes up and is a help.

Isn't there also dimensions that must be maintained between wheelsets on a bogie?
By which I mean the overall diameter of a wheelset must be the same as the other wheelset with a slight tolerance.
And also that the difference between diameters on 2 bogies on the same vehicle is also limited by a slightly larger tolerance.

This is what I used to have to take into account 30 years back when I did relief work on the wheel lathe in York Carriage shops.
However I cannot remember the limits.

No I do not currently volunteer
There are, but they vary depending what type they are & what they're under.

    Mark, these might help:—

MT 11 - Tyre Profile and Wheel Gauges for Rolling Stock - 1973
    MT 288 - Wheelset Tread Standards & Gauging - 1991
