Sticking my head above the parapet here, but have any lines ever run rakes of coaches painted in two liveries at the same time, by having one side painted differently to the other?
I understand that the ends may present a problem, but there is only a small window where one can see the paint wrapping around the corners of the carriage is there not?

It could be a way for railways to represent more than one era and have locos and stock that match more or less half the time (A lot of lines have locos in pre-grouping liveries paired with maroon stock).

Has this been tried before? Was it successful?

I'm pretty sure the Battlefield line has some Mk1's in Choc n cream on one side and blood and custard on the other, certainly photting 45379 last years suggests this.

Yes, visiting the Battlefield on Easter Monday revealed a 2-coach "duel personality" set in traffic, as you say Chocolate & Cream one side, Carmine & Cream the other. For me it wasn't particularly noticeable or grating in any way so an interesting idea really.

Again at the Battlefield, from around 2006-2010 (ish) the 2-car 116/118 DMU was Rail Blue on one side and Blue/Grey on the other.

I have also seen some mainline Mk2's (at a Hope Cement works open day a few years ago) which were maroon one side and Blue/Grey on the other. This was slightly more conspicuous (where the blue met the maroon in a neat vertical line above the corridor connections) but not excessively so.

I also suspect there are a myriad of coaches in static use that carry two liveries, but that's going slightly OT...

Have seen it done on model railways!

There would be scope on some locos as well: for example, a malachite spamcan with "SOUTHERN" on one side of the tender and "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on the other, or some GWR engines that could be lined Brunswick green in GWR or BR livery - the most glaring compromise would be the front end, where you would have to decide on smokebox or buffer beam number and hence be wrong in certain three quarter views, but it is quite a minor compromise.

I can think of at least 2 locos it has already been done on (Duchess of Hamilton (LMS Black and BR red) and City of Truro (GWR green and BR Black)), albeit not when either were in steam.

Didn't Butler Henderson also wear both types of BR black livery?

The East Anglian Railway museum also have one or two Mk1's in two different liveries. I believe one side is blood & custard, the other is maroon.

I remember this was done on the class 25 that was based at Swanage many years ago. BR blue on one side, and BR green on the other, with full yellow ends.

I suppose the only issue with painting a rake differing colours, if you're being nit-picking, is that uniformity would be compromised as carriages were turned to even wear. Of course, you could just do them all at once.

And the fact that GWR Middle Chrome Green is quite a bit lighter than BR Brunswick green.

I suppose it would be hard with certain combinations on locos that don't have yellow/black ends and roofs. Good to hear it's been done already though.

Certainly some of the more subtle differences could be done quite easily - an Olive SR loco could carry pre-and post-renumbering numbers on each side - of course, at it's simplest that would simply mean elimination of a tiny letter! BR Crests is another one of course.

I know that its not rolling stock as such, but I am surprised no one has yet mentioned, Fenchurch one of the Bluebell Terriers, which ran in the 1960's & 70's in a black livery, with different lettering on each side tank, one side had its name, the other the legend Newhaven Harbour Company, if I recall rightly the idea came from a "Man of the cloth" divine inspiration?

At the time of this I was told that the reason for this was that they ran out of time to complete the job.

Didn't the North London tank at the Bluebell run in two liveries at one time too?

They're up to four now, and very smart they look too. Unusually, one of the vehicles so treated is a Mk.1 suburban brake second.

Actually there was no such thing as "BR Brunswick green", both the GWR and BR used the same colour (deep bronze green IIRC) and it is still available to the original specs from Williamson's of Ripon. Unfortunately, over the years, some locos have been painted different shades which has given rise to the idea that they were different shades. Ray.

I think Barrow Hill do this, with B&G one side and maroon the other - as the far side is rarely seen, the turntable allows the impression of two different rakes.

The roof should have been the same colour as the sides ... or did they cheat and paint it grey?
