Slightly off topic, but does anyone have a gradient profile for Plymouth - Newton Abbot please? There are a few books out, but didn't think to buy it before just now! Will be going down on both day 1 and 2, so will provide a few updates if I can.

    Thanks in advance!

Trying to read the very small print in my Gradient Profiles book! An old book, and I don't know if the mileages shown correspond to mileposts on the ground.

Newton Abbot almost 194 miles. Very steep climb starts after MP 195, 1 in 44 in places to a summit near MP 197 ½, then drops almost as steeply, maybe more so in short stretches, to after MP 199.

Drops again to a level section around MP 201 ½ then level to Totnes at 202½. Then a very steep climb up Rattery Bank, summit of steepest section circa MP207, but climb continues not as steep through the tunnel to after Milepost 211, (Wrangaton). Mostly a steady drop at moderate grades to the site of Hemerdon Siidng, circa milepost 219. Then drops over a cliff at 1/42 down Hemerdon Bank to circa milepost 221½ at Plympton. The drops more gently and levels out around milepost 223 before unduating onto Plymouth near milepost 227.

Best I can do without finding my magnifying glass I am afraid!

Everything from Bryan is correct in terms of distance but if you are working from mileposts on the ground you need to be careful. Distances on the gradient profile map from Paddington to Plymouth are measured via Newbury and Westbury. But the mileposts from Taunton (Cogload Junction to be precise) pick up distances measured from Paddington via Swindon and Bristol. So at Whiteball Sidings, for example, although the gradient profile tells you that you are 153 and three quarters from Paddington, the milepost will be saying 174. So all you need to do is add about 20 (nearest whole number) to each of Bryan's distances and that'll give you what the milepost will say at the lineside. Trust me, I am a mathematician!

Oh, didn't realise that - will keep an eye out! Thanks for this Alan, and indeed to everyone who has been sending me links and other information!

Yes, I wasn't sure what the mileposts on the ground would correspond too.

And of course I have never had reason to go anywhere near those locations. What with those shiny things on top of the locos, never having the proper wheel arrangement, 4-6-2, and with the front number, which should always be a 3, left off!

I hope Fort William - Mallaig gets retimed. The ferry to Armadale leaves at 12.20, only 6 minutes after the arrival of the train! Unless they're planning to get the later ferry and bus passengers to Achnasheen for the run back to Inverness.

It's 4-6-0, and, what's this with this odd (no pun intended) number of cylinders? Is it only because the last one has broken? Typical Eastleigh engineering...

Thanks a lot Dave, really appreciate it - I didn't realise there was a brief 1in96 gradient heading up towards Dawlish station from the west... (I think that's a 1in96 anyway!)

Must be a very short section as I've never noticed it, I guess I, like yourself, imagined the sea wall section being virtually on the level.

Make no mistake, it's great that it is possible in 2013 to travel the length and breadth of Britain by steam - something to be grateful for. But do you sense that NR is taking the p--- slightly with their timings? It seems that each new trip brings a different record of which Day 9 may well be the latest. Edinburgh to KX in well over thirteen hours, with passengers imprisoned on the train for seven hours before a leg stretch of half an hour at York and later, possibly, at Retford.

80 minutes non stop from passing Huntingdon to KX may well be the final straw for the partners of hardened enthusiasts hoping to get home at a sensible time. (Compare this with the same booked time for Tornado that included two set down stops). What a marathon.

Also a note for those chasing on Monday, the leg from Llandindrod Wells to Preston had been retuned, and is leaving the former a good 2 1/2 hours earlier. If like myself, scuppers any chance of photos on the HoW line and then getting it beyond Shrewsbury. But then again, much better for Ian Riley's support crew if they are getting an earlier night.

And for different reasons, neither of these do West Coast work.
