This is how I view today's test run. Her exhaust sounded crisper than previous. So they are still working out the kinks and that is fine because in the long run getting it right before any excursions such as Fellsman's and Waverly's this summer is the right approach to take.

The fact that you are unlikely to hear any facts about what happened means that it is probably better to debate the livery :)

Without wishing to steer this off topic. Am I the only one who finds it annoying that in an article about this engine and WEst coasts restoration of it. That SR magazine instead of sticking to the facts of the matter they try and drag in individuals from other organisation and try to make them sound daft by quoting them out of context .

With this type of reporting it must come a no surprise that Carnforth adopt the atttutude they do toward enthusiasts.

Temporary because it was planned to run on the front of gbvi and it needed to be smarter than the plain livery. Original ruse was I guess for the April 1st run as Leander. In both cases think the timing didn't work out.

am i the only one who is bored stiff with the ongoing waffle about the paint colour,as has been pointed out mr smith can paint it any colour he likes, and that is the end of it.Lets try and find out why it failed,a much more interesting topic.thank you.

Always a possibility but even if it ends up in sky blue pink, we've another 5XP to play with and that can only be a good thing.

One of the images linked above of 45699 before it failed shows a considerable amount of steam around the rear of the right-hand cylinder, more than was seen on the earlier run. Even to the layman enthusiast in his armchair it does not look right. Did this contribute to the failure? I guess we will never know.

My steam roller leaked steam more and more form the rear cylinder cover when we first got it running, but tightening of all the cover nuts when hot sorted that out - that sort of steam leak is unlikely to be serious I'd say.

I suspect that the new livery will be more permanent than some wish. Its not cost effective to paint in one colour only to repaint it in green just to short term later.
After all the maroon colour fits well with WCRC coaching stock - bit of a corporate image!
WCRC and its owner have done a fantastic rebuild, and I look forward to a trip behind it in August when it is partnered up with 46115 Scots Guardsman - or perhaps another "red" Jubilee 5690 Leander - or will Leander be out-shopped in Brunswick Green!

On the (trivial) livery topic - I think we're missing the point. It's not BR maroon, it's Hogwarts maroon.

On the (more important) mechanical topic - we don't yet have another working 5XP, though it's getting closer all the time. Let's hope the present difficulties are normal running-in snags and not the start of long-term issues. Some locos have better reliability records than others, and I guess that's partly a matter of luck, but mostly of dedication and thoroughness. Carnforth's locos have been neither the best nor the worst in this regards, which I guess reflects a certain commercial pragmatism in overhaul and maintenance decisions, though it can't help that they don't have the their own line to trundle up and down to gently run-in new componants.

Possibly, if she gets another test or 2 in. Otherwise, my bets would be on Union of South Africa for May 22 as well as May 27. 60009 is already listed as one of the possibly(now highly likely) for May 27th though.

I think some kind of maroon is the favourite
However, a working 5XP on the mainline is something we are missing at the moment, so as long as they get the running in issues sorted and it is a reliable engine , then colour is a small issue of no real significance
Well done for WRC for getting her back into steam, whatever colour they decide on

If she does stay red whos up for a Red 46233 and a Red Black 5 (with the amount of BR Black ones it'd wouldn't hurt) to line up with 46203 and 48624 :D.
