Was the GWR signal in service or was it out of service with the signalman giving permissions from the box?

There are no GWR signals at Quorn, perhaps you're thinking of Swithland. There is a rather spiffing GCR signal for the Down Lie-bye exit though.

Only just found out about this & words completely fail me. Nothing more than sheer incompetence. I accept permission was given to pass the signal at danger so surely it was more important to check the catch points, although I don't know the reason why the signal wasn't working in the first place. There have been a lot of incidents on preserved railways lately in the way of derailments & collisions, I can see a big clamp down on their operations looming high.
I'm surprised the GCR wasn't immediately closed down pending further investigation by the authorities.

And what exactly would that achieve? There have been plenty of similar derailments (i.e. coming off on trap points or within sidings) on the national network over the last few years, and I'm not aware that the entire network was closed down pending further investigation on any of those occasions.

As usual you no absolutely nothing about the reasons why the incident happened but you're willing to blame anyone with any connection. When will you grow up?

    Hi all.
I've searched the site & cannot find anything about this, so I thought I'd post it.
Last weekend 46521 derailed at Quorn & Woodhouse:

    & the GCR's press release:
    http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/2013/04/low-speed-derailment-today/

The first video says that the driver had the right of way from the signal box, but nobody checked the catch rails.

your joking right? how about in the Swithland Gala pages... suggest there are enough 'experts' deciding what went on on that topic. so another one here isnt really justified. lets all leave this alone now, and allow the GCR to follow this up in there own way! oh and btw they dont have to publicly announce what went wrong.

That would take all the fun out of being a member on this forum. I take the RIAB would be involved in his mishap?

whilst they are perfectly within their right too if they wish, it doesnt fall under any of their criteria. whilst you may think it takes all the fun out of it, hows about if the said driver and/or fireman are also members of this forum? if you were a member of the crew would you want your actions debated by those who (from the comments I have read on here (other topic) and FB) know FA about running and operating a railway? cause I wouldnt. Certainly not from those who dont know the rules and procedures that allow a train past a danger aspect without committing a SPAD

Surprised you know so much of exactly what happened, especially as you weren't there. Something went wrong obviously but what and why is something for an investigation to establish, not hyperbole on an internet forum.

I DID do a search, for both `derailment' & `46521'. NOTHING came up. This is why I posted this thread. If the mods wish to merge it with that thread, or delete it, so be it.

Just a trifle stuffy I fear. The video having been published, various comments made have it clear that the matter may be more complicated than mere playing of the sequence might suggest, The fact remains there has been an all wheels off derailment in embarrassing circumstances. What led to these circumstances will come out in time but you can bet that alertness levels will be enhanced as a result of seeing the sequence. Not a bad thing.

Not a bad thing if lessons are learned, but there's an awful lot of knowitalls spouting rubbish showing just how little they actually know.

I haven't blamed anyone! I am probably a lot older than you, so don't tell me to grow up sonny. Didn't take you long to bite at me again as usual did it, despite being told to lay off. Being a railway worker does not give you the right to have a go at everyone else.

... which gives a very partial view of what happened.

The loco went past a signal in the "on" position. The long whistle suggests that the driver considered he had authority to pass it at danger - but without talking to him/her, that's only supposition. And even assuming he felt he had authority - where did it come from? The video doesn't show any conversation with a signalman, nor the contents of any such conversation, nor whether there is any reason why it was felt necessary to give such authority rather than just clear the signal. Careful investigation could probably get to the bottom of those questions, but the film alone doesn't provide answers.

In short, the camera might not lie, but it also hasn't recorded a huge amount of information that would be very germane to understanding the circumstances. Given that, to label the incident as "sheer incompetence" suggests that you have answers to those and other questions over and above what is revealed in the film.

    Paul,

at no point do the GCR have to announce the reasons/what they have done about it publicly. so it wont come from them as i doubt it would be in their interest too. as for RAIB (im getting fed up of typing this...) the derailment did not happen on the open running line, the result of the derailment did not obstruct the open running line, no-one was seriously injured as a result of the derailment. therefore RAIB wont 'have' to investigate. fortunately the RAIB dont consider 'embarrassing' as a big reason to investigate, they tend to investigate if the matter is a concern for 'safety'

typed from a non- 'stuffy' (whatever you mean by that...) member of the forum who is getting fed up (as a operating volunteer) of those members of this forum who only stand and ride between stations behind Steam/Diesel etc but when something happens suddenly consider themselves Judge, Jury and Executioner and a fountain of knowledge of all things railway...
