As others have said one has to read a bit around reviews. For MoSI in Manchester I have seen the overall trend going up on reviews over the last few years. Not quite 5 star but 4.5 overall. Thing to bear in mind that can skew data is how many reviews have been done and duplicates of sites that seem to appear there. The best recommendation though tends to be good old word of mouth.

No I do not currently volunteer
Tripadvisor should stick to what they are good at, cheap Air fares.

Can't afford to get stuffy about modern communications. Yes, the postings may be unfair and have an element of "received opinion" about them but can give quite a good idea about what the public really think, however silly. If something is going badly wrong, as seems to be the case of a couple of places I can think about, such postings can be a valuable warning.

Yes I am an active volunteer
I use tripadvisor all the time, and use it to select hotels and where to visit. I also comment on my experience both good and bad. When reviewing others comments I always check out their history ie how many reviews they written, are they always good or bad, or a fair spread.
Preserved / heritage need to embrace modern forms of communication, and I hope that someone from each of the railways is given the responsibility to check for reviews of their site, and feed back to management whether good or bad.

Quite. You cannot 'put the genie back in the bottle', but as others have said, it's worth seeing both other reviews of the railway/tour/operator in question, & also review any other reviews of critics. Sometimes you get a 'one-off' 'reviewer' who is just outright nasty. Make of that what you will...

Like so many other things, Tripadvisor is a tool, not the 'be all & end all'. However, it's as well for managers to keep an eye on reviews, as once in a while a critical review has substance, & thus can be addressed.
