    Yes, the smart move by the crew to stop in Rhyl station was sadly not smart enough. Only the up line is bi-directional - hence the stuck trains behind Tornado. The rescue diesel came up the (down) through road but had, I believe to be cleared for wrong line working to do so. This illustrates quite well the nonsense decision making of Network Rail to strip back the track work to all that is necessary for the current services. The moment something goes wrong with steam or anything else, they suddenly find that their solution was removed a while back. Beeching is alive and well in a different form and with an accountancy degree.

    To be fair that was BR.

    Network Rail will in due course be resignalling the North Wales Coast (control of which is set to go to CARDIFF!!! - Damn politics) and I suspect it will include some form of bi-directional signalling as it is seen as important for flexibility and resiliance. An example of this kind of design is the 'modular signalling' kit, already in place but not yet commisioned on the Shrewsbury Crewe line. It has been delayed due to a number of issues which need ironing out.

    I believe the plan is also to remove the down passenger loop at Abergele but replace the Up Through Line at Rhyl.

    Not if they are maintained well. Lubrication is usually the issue. But I don't see that the compressors have been blamed officially?

    Well, it was the compressor as only one of the two on Tornado was operational on the day. But I agree that we shouldn't be 'blaming' a piece of equipment that is only as good as the maintenance regime it is subject to. Quite a surprise that the equipment had to be sent back to Germany for attention and it was that delay that effectively screwed up Tornado's availability on Steam Dream's flagship Explorer tour. So the ramifications of a single failure were actually quite far reaching.
