Hampton Loade Station Fund on the Severn Valley Railway are currently in the process of restoring a G(VI)R wall mounted post box for installation on the side of the station building, where one once stood prior to closure of the line in 1963. We are however missing a key for the door lock, and would like to appeal to anyone who may be able to help.

If you have a key or can provide details of where to obtain one we would be very grateful to hear from you! Please PM me or email slench.hlsvr AT gmail.com for further details or if you can help.
    Thank you
    Hampton Loade Station Fund

This is the sort we are looking for:

Have you tried the Post Office Royal Mail.
Their head office in Sheffield might be able to help.

The thought occurred to me that the Post Office might take a dim view of members of the general public having a key which would enable them to get into post boxes at random! They might be prepared to open the box for you so enabling another lock to be substituted.

Of course, if your intention is to restore this box to use (I know of one instance on a preserved railway where this has been done) there would be no problem as the Post Office would be opening the box anyway.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the public having keys is a potential issue. Restoring the box to use would be an ideal objective if possible, however, when the SVR closed in 1963 the wall box was removed from the station building and a lamp type EIIR box was installed some 100 yards or so down the lane. We shall have to contact Royal Mail and see!

You could try suggesting that railway letter service business would be substantially increased if there were a letter box on the station. This was what led to the installation I referred to previously as well as holiday postcard use.
