I know some of the Broad Gauge loco's were more than happy at 60MPH, but even so 33mins is flying for something like that!.

That 1848 run rather puts things into perspective, doesn't it?

Not really, no other railway at that time was hitting anything like those kind of speeds.

Making allowance for the slow start out of Paddington and the slowing to negotiate the junctions and platform speed restrictions at Reading, this 31 minutes was about the net time on Saturday. What you also have to make allowance for in all of this discussion is that the Bristolian in the late 50's would have had 7 standard Mark 1's for a tare weight of around 245 tons compared with the 385 tons AND 75 mph restriction which 5043 had last Saturday. I would have thought that the timers of the 50's would have been somewhat excited by that!

    Regards
    Bob
