What are the tall cylindrical containers either side of the smokeboxes? Sand boxes?

Had an excellent day at the FR today. Two quick shots, rest to follow when I get home (after two more days here...)

Thanks Steve - I've always wondered and sandboxes seemed most likely when I'd mentally eliminated about every other possibility!

They definitely give the engines a quirky look: I always think of two Victorian vases either side of a clock on a mantlepiece. :)

One of the things that I find appealing about Victorian/Edwardian era locos is that whilst they are "fit for purpose" (at least within the constraints of the understanding and technology of the day) there is a certain elegance in the design - possibly wasteful in terms of the amount of unnecessary polished brass on some locos (but I'm not complaining!). More modern locos may have been more efficient, most were more functional in their appearance, and probably easier to maintain, but, to my eyes at least, nowhere near as beautiful.

OK, so I know that others will disagree! So let me say that I'm glad the Ffestiniog has the 1870s style "Merddin Emrys", but equally glad that it has the 1970s style "Earl of Meirionydd". Please don't rebuild it!

Privately-owned Bagnall Isaac, rebuilt at Boston Lodge, was officially named at Harbour Station on Saturday evening. The loco will initially run on the L&B.

It needs turning round to match GELERT, it also needs an air pump! (assuming there is not one on the other side.)

    Does look very nice!!!

I do hope that GELERT and ISAAC get a chance to meet before ISAAC heads off down south.

Not yet but there will be a pump on the other side soon...:)

As to Gelert and Isaac getting together well, maybe, just maybe.
