Could anyone advise what are the best spots on this railway within reasonable walking distance from stations along the line? A flickr search suggests the railway is not too well blessed with "master shots" but are there any good ones I have missed?

The foreshore at Bo'ness is pretty easy to get to from the town, just follow the railway line as it runs along the banks of the Forth. There should be plenty of opportunity to get a few shots.

Once again thanks for the pointer, weather wasn't great but still got a nice shot on the foreshore... :)

Firstly, my apologies, I didn’t see this post until this evening as I normally only check the BKR thread. For future reference if you return or anyone else is interested. As said above, the foreshore provides plenty of opportunities between Kinneil and Bo’ness.

Departing Bo’ness from the footbridge with signal box in view:

A view down onto the foreshore with the River Forth in the background:

After Kinneil the railway turns out of the trees for a few hundred yards, and it is at this point line speed increases from 10 to 20mph so there is always a little bit of exhaust as seen here:

Just a few hundred yards up, either side of the main road bridge (known as Snab Bridge) provides a decent shot, the shot looking North-east being the better:

The south-west View is still fairly good:

As we get a little closer to Birkhill, going off the main road and onto the side road under the railway underpass gives a nice shot of the train in the woods climbing the bank:

Arriving at Manuel also provides a nice view of the E&G and BKR Metals, and with a platform soon to be opened here it will no doubt open up a few more views of the locomotives climbing to the finish of the line:

Sadly the BKR’s best shots like Birkhill station, the Avon Viaduct and High Bridge can only be unlocked on photo charters as the society does not currently offer lineside passes. Hope this helps. Must also say that these are not my photos, so I hope the owners do not mind them being linked onto here.
