Largest allocation of same class of loco.

During one period in the 60's Birkenhead (8H) had 56 class 9F's allocated, although the highest number which I personally saw on shed was 46 (on a Sunday ). This total included several of the Crosti variety.
The question is, did any other shed have a larger number of examples of one class of loco ?

I think Carlisle Kingmoor had the Complete allocation of britannias in the early 60s.

 

Kingmoor (12A) is shown as having 69 Black 5s allocated as late as 1965.

 

Surely, that number is theoretical. A lot of the N7s were allocated to the sub-sheds.

 

Nearly, but there was a handful that didn't move to 12A, 70000 for one.

 

I am not going to count them, but you could look at the following during the late 50s: -
Stanier Class 5s at Perth
Stanier 8Fs at Toton
WD 2-8-0s at Wakefield
4Fs at Saltley
B16 4-6-0s at York
J26 0-6-0s at Thornaby

 

N2s at Kings X - 50+, I think, in the 1950s.

 

All class 86's (and 87's) were all allocated to Willesdon ...heaven knows where they parkd them.

 

There were something like 70+ WD 2-8-0s at Wakefield right into the mid60s

 

I'd have thought some of the South Wales sheds would be in contention here with 28xx/2884/42xx/5205/57xx/94xx/56xx etc

Not quite the record in absolute numbers, but big as a proportion of the number built:

Mid 1880s:

Battersea (LBSCR):
Terriers: 21 (from 50 built)
D Tanks: 50 (from 125 built)

In both cases, about 40% of the entire class in one shed.

New Cross (LBSCR):
Terriers: 23 (or 46% of the class)
D Tanks: 28

The Terriers at New Cross lived in an octagonal roundhouse, with a tiny central turntable and fifteen roads each long enough for one engine; the sixteenth road was the entrance / exit. This building, for obvious reasons, was called the "Rooter shed".

if we are talking about high proportions Newport [51B in 1955] had 41 out of 50 J26 0-6-0

 

Continuing the modern ones..all 48 73s at SL, all 50 58s at Toton, all 31 91s at BN, all 40 85s at CE.
Are not all non SNCF domestic Eurostars now maintained at Stratford ?

 

This is the Steam Tractions thread but if you are talking vintage non-steam then you would have to include the Reddish based 26xxx and 27xxx electrics for the Woodhead route.

 

Carrying on the ex-GWR theme, Old Oak Common had 48 57XX tanks allocated in 1957, including the condensing locos.

 

250 class 66s were allocated to Toton TMD in 2004/5.

 

I'd imagine places like Wolverhampton Oxley & St Phillips Marsh had a healthy 57XX allocation too.
