An Appeal has been launched to help fund the overhaul of Loco No.3 'Sir Haydn' of The Talyllyn Railway. It is hoped to begin this work in 2014 at the earliest.

Is there a scope for a "deal" with the Corris here? They have a suitable boiler but nothing to fit it in yet. The East Somerset Railway have done a comparable deal with the Isle of Wight Steam Railway whereby, inter alia, the latter's 2MT 2-6-0 has gone to Cranmore for a ten year period.

The circumstances are not entirely similar but deals of this kind do mitigate the endemic problem of railway preservation where large amounts of capital are tied up over long periods with no return.

Exactly where No. 3 with a "transplant" boiler would operate would be one of the points for negotiation.

I do believe there has been a large amount of co-operation on big items such as cylinder castings between the two railways, sharing costs etc. but Im not sure on the exact details.

The overhaul will not start until 2014 at the earliest, it is only then will Pendre know exactly what needs repairing or replacing, there are a lot of well qualified theories on what needs doing but until its stripped no-one will know for sure. I have heard the theory the boiler may be sound and it would be a big ask to take a new boiler from a new build project to repair another loco.

Nice to see the use of texting donations - but still no use to those of us overseas or those wanting to give larger amounts. Still no one click donation button on the Talyllyn website (how long does it take to approve such things?)! C'mon, the L&B and Corris have had website Paypal buttons for years ... !!

The colour No.3 is wearing was decided by a Facebook poll on the Talyllyn Facebook Page. The final colour can finally be revealed!

Limited Hand-Signed prints are now available at £25 in a numbered edition of 150. 50% of the proceeds going to the 'Sir Haydn Appeal'.

 

There is no scope for lending the boiler from Corris No.10 for No.3, much as we would like to see it back in steam as soon as possible, as once the boiler is steamed, the timer starts ticking towards its ten-year examination. We want No.10 to have a full ten years of operation before needing a full strip-down.

There are also detail differences between the boilers of Nos. 3 (as currently carried) and 10 - the latter is reverting to the original Corris layout of bottom-feed, and has adapted the regulator design to be similar to CR 7 as that on No.3 is felt to be flawed. These changes were the result of discussions with the Talyllyn engineering staff.

There has been co-operation between the two railways in the making of patterns, and there may well be cylinder castings produced for both locos at the same time, depending on what No.3 needs when it is stripped down and examined - which is unlikely to be during this year while it is enjoying its tour of England.

Currently work on No.10 is concentrating on the frames.

My original comments were made quite a time ago since when I understand it is not absolutely certain T.R. No. 3 will actually need a new boiler.

However I am quite unrepentant in principle about the need for railways to make a better use of capital outlay. Money tied up doing nothing for an indefinite period is a complete waste. It is a bit like saying "I am not going to live in my house for x years but will not rent it out and get an income either". Design issues seem to preclude this happening here which is a pity.

The boiler for No.10 is on display at Maespoeth to demonstrate progress on the loco's construction and thereby encourage potential donors to contribute to the appeal. As more parts are manufactured and the day comes closer when the loco will be complete, the level of donations increases - this was the case with No.7 and the No.10 appeal is expected to follow suit. Ergo I would suggest that it is actually performing a service, rather than representing "money tied up doing nothing".

There would be very little point sending No.10's boiler to No.3 even if it were possible to fit as the TR has no real need for No.3 to return to traffic within the next couple of years. No.6 is just about to start hauling trains at the end of the month which gives the railway 5 working steam engines (out of 6).

Had the boilers been interchangeable No. 3 could run at Corris using the new boiler. However it cannot be which is, as said before, a great pity. These sort of considerations will have to be thought of more as the years pass!

Probably a silly question but I will ask it anyway. Why not strip the loco now and see how bad it is? If its really bad then put it back together and use it to help raise money/awareness. If it turns out to be not as bad as thought, it could return to steam sooner rather than later. If its really bad then at least you know how much money is needed.

It seems silly to say No. 3 is not needed at present, you never know when it might be needed, steam loco's do fail.

 

This would take up valuable time that at the moment Pendre works doesn't have. They are in the midst of returning No.6 to steam, undertaking bogie maintenance on the carriage fleet as well as keeping up with maintaining the other five locos this year. No.3 has to wait her turn which it is doing in some style touring the country this year, it was either that or she stayed locked away in a shed, or in bits, which would be a shame.

It would be great to know exactly what will need doing to No.3 to return her to steam, there are general assumptions from lots of sources. Going into an overhaul in 2014 with a large sum of donations behind her will be something unique and should ensure finance isn't a factor in holding back a return to steam.
