Would you only ever do this with a bare chassis or can it be done with the boiler in situ without significantly overloading the rear bogie and springs on a pacific ?

Some railways had them others didn't. I think there is a video of a Bulleid pacific at Nine Elms being hoiked up to have it a coupled wheel hot axle box sorted out.

I don't think that it was the practice to use this method for wheeling an entire chassis though. There are photos of the chassis being held aloft over a set of wheels by cranes. the chassis was then lowered onto the wheels. I would imagine that this was a pretty intricate and delicate operation, requiring a lot of patience and skill.

Shear legs were common at the loco sheds. They would never take a boiler off before lifting a loco! You avoid the load on the springs by blocking up the rear of the frames.

Hard yes - but still free !.

This is how we did Dubsy - three sets of packing required. Method is quite safe, takes a bit of time but its a hobby after all !.

I see that 34053 has been removed from the SVR roster at short notice, and is descriobed as "unavailable". I hope it's nothing too serious???

I wondered about that as well. The svr engineering twitter thing said it was due for wash-out this last week, maybe they found something during that process that requires further attention, although I see from the SVR website that it is shown as unavailable as far ahead as next Friday.

If you do twittering, why not ask them (..or him, or whoever tweets there).

It would be a good idea if someone with the appropriate permissions removed the word "re-wheeled" from the thread title. I'm afraid I can't find the "report thread" option in this new version of the forum to notify the moderators....

Edited to add: "Ah! there it is!!"
