Flat? You need to look at a gradient profile chum. Bethnal Green and Brentwood Banks before it's even left Greater London.

Well, with tent rolled up after my overnight at Liverpool St, I joined the other insomniacs for the early morning departure. A lively run to Shenfield where we were 7 early But a combination of TSRs and an unscheduled diversion to sit in the loop at Witham plus the usual approach control at Colchester meant we were there for water only a little early. Time to watch the hundreds of trains.....not.....that then had to pass, explaining the inhospitable departure time.

The leg from crawling through Ipswich to the signal stop at Trowse Swing Bridge was quick - about even time including two TSRs. And the rest of the day as a whole was pretty good. There is a novelty in having breakfast in Norwich and lunch in King's Lynn but not worth repeating. The sun shone eventually and we were back on time having left KL 40 late, proving the point about this day having a fair amount of recovery time in the schedule.

A competent performance overall with the engine in its usual workmanlike appearance - see snap at Norwich. And the Fens had an extra dusting of treatment for their crops as Tangmere dropped a layer of soot over the landscape as she passed by.

I would not call 1 in 70 (Bethnal Green Bank) a pimple (It's steeper than Shap) Barry

Then there's Brentwood Bank, 3 miles at 1 in 103/85. There's a fair bit of work against the collar in both directions. I don't have a gradient profile for the East Suffolk but there's a couple of stiff climbs on that stretch.

About a mile but as it's just after leaving Liverpool Street it's climbed with a cold engine. While not on the scale of the northern fells, the Norwich main line has enough climbs to have given a good work out for the Brits.

We went over the top at Ingrave in 22 min which is pretty good for 19.25 miles. Have to say that the load of 9 suited Tangmere very well and on the outward leg in particular the West Coast crew took advantage of it.
