Our Heritage News Editor Andrew Fowler, witnessed history being made shortly before midnight last night. At the Coupe Foundry in Higher Walton, the iron was poured for a 'Patriot' cylinder for the first time in around 70 years. The location was an appropriate one, with several of the class shedded nearby at Preston (24K) and latterly Lostock Hall (24C/10D). The casting, which will now be left for several days to cool before the sand mould is broken away, is for the middle cylinder and required about 2.8 tons of SG (ductile) iron. Andrew was fortunate enough to be invited along to witness the spectacular sights in the foundry, as another part for the new-build locomotive, the new national memorial engine No. 45551 'The Unknown Warrior', was cast.
