    Many thanks Ralph.

My memory of Penrith is that it was a good place to re-start from. With a Brit that then made a most wonderful noise climbing to Shap, with 86 down towards Tebay. Todays noise with 8 cylinders compared with 2 must have been rather nice too!

Strewth Ralph. You've got me looking for logs I haven't looked at since I timed them in 1967! Found a Black 5 on the 14.00 ex Glasgow with 13 on! I assume 45436 was a Blackie! Not bad either. 25 over Shap, mid 70s down the other side.

A Saturday when I went over Shap four times behind Brits! Twice in each direction.

A wonderful Black 5 run on the 11.21 Carlisle to Blackpool train 8 on. Recovered from a 22 mph tsr at Thrimby Grange to 40 over Shap. 87 at Tebay, 82 below Lancaster and 84 approaching Carnforth.

Plus that Brit whose noise I can still hear. 14.00 ex Glasgow. 11 on. 49 mph min on the 1/125 up Shap, up to 54 then eased to 50 over the summit. 86 at Tebay. Nearly 13 late leaving Penrith, over a minute early into Preston.

Another great Black 5 run on a Carlisle -Preston train. 9 on. 38 mph min on the climb and 46 over the actual summit of Shap. 83 Tebay, and sustained high speed for over 11 miles to Carnforth. One 1/4 mile at 90, but needs to go on a spreadsheet to check that. Down to 75 then high 80s again. B....r me. Why do they have a 60mph limit these days? So much fast running from those lovely 4-6-0s back then.

I'm supposed to be working on my Owl book today. I'll have to put these notes books away or I'll spend a few days with them!

Enjoy the rest of the run and day Ralph. And thanks for getting me to look back at some superb runs in your part of the wold.

2 late at Lancaster, working v hard. Castle sounded to be doing a lot of work but may just have sounded like that as 5043 is a little erm vocal! Another great show by VT well done all!

As a photographer I'm not really a fan of double headers, but as a spectacle...................brilliant!

Wouldn't have fancied being in the cab of the Duchess though. OUTBOUND

Marginally better weather and less wind for the RETURN.

Wonderful videos of a wonderful train! It's just struck me that each loco can be regarded as the "train" engine with the other as pilot, if you apply GW practice to the Castle and LMS practice to the pacific.

Maybe Ben wanted to end the day with 12 cylinders in charge of the train and 7029 wasn't around to add to 5043 and the Duchess?

5043 and 46233 going like the clappers at Catterall on the way back to Crewe.

Apparently the hydrant at Crewe is too low on pressure. Hence it was not possible to water both engines in the 40 minutes allotted. Hence the decision to use the diesel south of Crewe in order to keep to the schedule.
The passengers, including myself, only found out once on board the train, so it must have been a late change of plan.
I am sure that a full explanation will be forthcoming on these forums.

Got pretty soaked waiting for the pair at Wolverhampton when the news filtered through that the steamers had been taken off at Crewe. I'm glad i'm not the only one that seems to have done this, but it raises the question why the locos needed to be taken off in the first place?

The pressure in that hydrant has been poor for years.
