Hi everyone. Does anyone have any recommendations concerning the sealing material between glass and the steel coach side. There are many options but I would be interested in users experience as I am currently involved in a Mk1 restoration. Thanks

Glass + steel. I'm only aware of glass + aluminium frame.

    Single or double, glazed?

Or are you asking about the the aluminium frame to the steel body?

Some mk1's don't have window frames and the glass mounts directly against the glass. I need redo the seals and do a bodywork repair on mine soon

In which case I'd suggest double sided adhesive foam - available from any decent Glazier in varying widths/thicknesses.

Tip - do not remove the 'outer' covering material/paper otherwise, if you then discover that the thickness of the 'padding' is insufficient, they are then a bugger to detach so as to insert another layer.

Inserting an additional layer to the 'outer' of the window would serve only to retain moisture.

Yes I had thought of that but when the windows were removed they had been bedded in some non setting mastic of which there are many varieties on the market. some are just sealents and others are adhesive+sealant. As there are rather a lot of windows I want to try and get it right . Thanks

No there is no frame, the glass fixes inside the steel shell and is held in with a timber frame.single glazed.

The traditional sealant which BR and pre nationalisation companies used is Arboseal which is a very sticky none setting mastic. It is still supplied in strip form on a reel. The company from memory is based in Safford, they do a very useful online catalogue. We stocked up only a few weeks ago.

    +1

At Didcot we use Arboseal on Collett & Hawksworth stock: http://www.arbo.co.uk/arbo-sealants/arboseal-gz-tape/ Easy to use, stays flexible for at least 10 years & is overpaintable. Far superior to the original system of thin felt & Gold Size.

Having tried a few methods, Arboseal is by far the best, is still good after 15 years on one coach. Best to leave it to settle and bed in after clamping up the glass, then just remove any surplus with a Stanley knife.

At Wirksworth we are using Automotive windscreen adhesive such as this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DINITROL-..._Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item337b93daaa which is making window installation much easier than sorting all the 2BA set screws and studs out(The always seem to be some that snap off when you remove the clampwood) . There are other makes of the product by 3M etc you do have to by an Etching formulation that goes with it to etch the glass prior to applying the glue itself.
