Fabulous footage Alberta, particularly 60009....brought back many memories of my childhood travelling behind steam trains leaning out of the window, particularly A4's. The slips reminded me of A4's starting out of Leeds Central where I spent a great deal of time. Musing.....what is it about steam loco's?......I'm a keen motorcyclist and would compare that to a steam loco.....you're more in touch with the elements.......a diesel is like a car....sat in an enclosed environment........just a theory, a thought.....

Well it seems I've worked out how to upload to YouTube, so here's 60009 heading south on Monday.

Well Brian Grierson had the benefit of doing the same run with Tornado on the Explorer in 2012. Looking at your notes and my log from then it seems that the two runs compare well given that in 2012 it was (only!) 11 for 410 gross. Dumochter was a lot quicker in 2012 but we had the benefit of running through Blair Atholl at a faster base speed and so were into the steep stuff from Struan in the high forties. That said, it seems that the extra coach only took a few mph off the climb this year as we sustained around 37/38 up the 1 in 70 and recovered quickly beyond Dalnaspidal to hit the top at an amazing 49. At the time I had calculated the DBHP on the 5 miles of 1 in 70 between MP 44 and 49 at around 2100 so it would be interesting to know whether anyone has done the same calculation for 2013 (or has the data for me to work it out - Contact me with a PM and I'll tell you what I need). Slochd was cleared at 29 in 2012 with a similar slow drop off to the summit. All in all, a very powerful performance that should please Mark Allatt a great deal from the point of view of the A1 design tweaks to get better steam flow and use. Such a pity that the influence of Chapelon in the UK was rather limited...but that's off topic and another debate!
