Thank you guys for the information re 6023's tender. Interesting, as 6024's current tender was never with the loco during GW/BR service days either.

It was my understanding however that King tenders were unique and different to the other Collett 4,000 gallon tenders as the water pipes between tender and locomotive are larger - that's why you never saw a King attached to a Hawksworth tender. Therefore unless a completely new one has been built I assume that one way or the other the two tenders now running are the two that went to Barry with 6023 and 6024?

IIRC 6023 and 6024 were stored at Swindon sans tenders and were only re-coupled to tenders when they were needed to be moved to S.Wales. I assume they just used any suitable tender available. Didn't know about Kings having larger injector feed pipes though. Ray.

Plenty of photos of 6023 & 6024 minus their tenders at Swindon following withdrawal. I too used to think King tenders were unique - not so as that currently with 6024 also ran behind Kings, Castles, Halls and a Star! Problem finding written records of which tender accompanied each loco to Barry.

The only class I am sure had non-interchageable tenders were the Hawksworth Counties. But I've heard the water pipe tale too somewhere. But I suppose its feasible that the pipes were reasonably interchangeable so that a tender due to come out of the works at the same time as a King could be fitted with the right gear. Does anyone know? Presumably King owners know if their tenders are swappable with Castles...

All the Collet and standard Churchward tenders are interchangeable between classes but the variable item is the footplate height which is designed to be capable of alteration along with the wear plate at the bottom of the coal space to suit. So it is quite possible for a Collet 4000g tender to have run with any of 60xx/4073/49xx/47xx/68xx/40xx/29xx etc during its lifetime. I have no knowledge of the water feed pipe story but it would not be a big job to put different size feed pipes on at a woks or shed.

The Hawksworth County tenders were wider to match the wider cab making them non standard in that respect.

Isn't there a smaller portable version being created though as well, which is how VT are going to be able to keep their Panniers mainline?

A little something I cobbled together, a King in profile.

Taken during Didcot's steam gala back in early May.

Excellent news about the Mainline running plans.

How on earth does the GSM-R equipment cost 57k GBP? I'd love to see a breakdown of this figure..

I know a loco owner who has just had it installed at about 20k for everything. Design and equipment.

According to the 6023 website "A solution has been found to the GSM-R issue that will cost somewhat less than £57K"

Available for steam but understandably at this time of year and the amount of coal she scoffs, seems to be used sparingly especially as Didcot will be reasonably quiet until Easter so the gate takings won't balance a King scoffing coal. Its also sensible boiler management - steam her in the summer and she'll maybe run weekends and Wednesday or a 3 day bank holiday weekend so gets a fair amount of use from a boiler "day" whereas at this time of year its New Years Day and then nothing till Feb half term.

Anything more on her going mainline ?, seems to have gone quiet on that front and the boiler ticket is running.

From what I was told at Steam Aid II by the lads working on her AND directly involved with her, err, not likely in the short term............................ still needs a lot of money spending on her for various bits & pieces that just isn't there............................. shame really considering the the Hoo Hah leading up to her launch! So don't hold your breath.......................................

That's what I feared, just seems at the current rate there wont be much opportunity for use before it requires a retube/boiler ticket reset.

Looks like Edgcumbe will have to fly the Swindon flag solo for a while yet.
