The trip is advertised as Coast to Coast, ie Liverpool to Scarborough, that's where it is still going and that's what I meant regarding passengers getting the run they wanted. If NR chose to do major trackwork and some of the route has to be altered, I'm again positive that the majority of passengers will not be that bothered, OK some will have to change their plans re boarding, or cancel. No doubt RTC will have allowed for that.

Nigel is off to Sri Lanka to check on the loco situation for the 2014 tour. I have especially asked that he looks at the 2ft 6 inch gauge Sentinel steam railcars and that 331 is under cover. Many of the locos in the shed in Colombo are now in the open air........
I suspect 251 and 340 may be in the frame for the tour which includes Trimcomalee after many years of war preventing safe access.
He enjoyed his birthday train as did his guests and staff and mentioned the outline of GB7 which is v exciting. As Railway Herald has a story tomorrow I stay silent. Suffice that the Cornwall bit is good as is Scotland.......!

    June 6. Is 60019. June 9. 70013

Obviously, Ollie was really wanted this weekend but it wasn't to be despite a lot of effort

I am not posting much at present but hope NP members enjoy the summer of steam despite availability problems recently.
On Sunday evening the crew of the Jubilee told me they were pleased with the days' run and I expect it will appear in the summer providing WCRC agree. Mr Smith and the people at Carnforth are my heroes btw. A new Jub in 2013.......wow!

Is the coast to coast running as single engine 70013 or double headed with 45305 as per uk steam?

RE: Post 180 above: I was in fact agreeing with Ralph's suggestion that "there are too many [enthusiasts] who assume that they are the larger group on all steam hauled tours", so will agree to disagree on the issue.

Single engine(5305) from Liverpool to ?, Single engine (70013) to York and Scarborough. Return vice versa.
Well that was how it was originally planned. Now its 70013 for the whole tour apparently. There is some confusion here. Now I'm at the point where you are.

Just wondering if there is any further news regarding the SR Anniversary run on the 9th July? I guess it's going to be 34067 solo?

Sorry if these are in a different thread, can't find them. Does anyone have any times for the A4 and Tangers on Saturday? Or know when they'll be available?

Received a letter from RTC a couple of days ago saying that the 8th September North Wales Coast Express has been brought forward to 18th August due to an engineering block.

The Royal Wessex 21/9/13 has been revised from Littlehamton - Acton - Weymouth and return, with 34046 from Acton and return to Acton.

    to

Three Bridges - Worthing - Weymouth with 34046 out and 30777 back.

34046 is also listed for the THE EXE PARRETT - Pathfinder and 30777 is attending the Severn Valley Autumn Gala according to the SVR website.

I also though there were a couple of gauging issues on the route via Hamble, the bridge over the Hamble which is on a curve and Hamble Station.

I would like to travel on the route via Hamble behind steam ,but I am not prepared to book and find the trip goes through London like last years trip( which I did not book on).Does anybody know if steam is now allowed on this route ?

RTC say the 8th September trip is now ex Liverpool. It seems like they have swapped the Liverpool & Manchester North Wales trains around as the 18th August trip was originally planned to be from Liverpool.

It would be interesting to find out which locos have worked via Hamble in the preservation era. I'm struggling to think of many tours that have run that way. 828 went from Salisbury to Littlehampton and back in 1995, but which route it took from Romsey I can't remember. If 34067 was ruled out of gauge at Hamble last year, it doesn't look like much else will fit, as Bulleids are pretty gauge-friendly. A Black Five perhaps?

It is odd that at one stage, UK Steam had this tour down as cancelled, but it has now been reinstated with a different route but in charge of the two original locos, even though they will not be wortking it. However, UK Steam is faithfully reproducing what is on the RTC website, which on more than one occasion has failed to update a given page with the appropriate loco(s) until the last minute.

It sure did, I think there is possibly a weight limit placed on said Hamble bridge, hence the reason why tours no longer head in that direction. Mr Romsey will probably be best at giving a definate answer on this.

I think the last loco to go that way before 76079 was 73096 a few years before when the Mid Hants were active on the main line, so both fairly light loco's compared to some on the main line these days.

I have filmed Clan Line coming off the Hamble line at St Denys in the mid-1990s, and Flying Scotsman at the top of the climb at Swanwick, pulling the VSOE, c. 2001. I can't recall any steam using that line since then.

Just noticed this Saturdays Yorkshireman to York...with 70013 outward.

6.30 am from Victoria, arrives at 2pm,
But though I noticed he return was diesel hauled, departing at 5pm,

Oliver Cromwell departs York back to Southall LE+support, 7 minutes behind the diesel return working, and arrives at Southall at 22.43, the same time the tour reaches London 22.42....

Yes, the LE move back south is interesting. Three and a half hours York to almost King's Cross, with two water stops, as opposed to tomorrow's trip with 60163 which takes five and a half hours to do the same journey, which includes various pathing stops and set downs.

That is incredible. So maybe the answer is to stop trying to please everyone with multiple pick ups/set downs, get the punters to travel to key places (KX and P'boro come to mind on the ECML), so that a decent path can then be found, and people get to their destinations and, more important, home quicker. You do have to question the logic of a train like the SD York trip taking ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY min to get to Peterborough when Tornado could get there in one hit from KX.

Just looked at RTT. It's actually 4 and a half to Finsbury Park not three and a half (5944 please note) but the same general point is true.

It seems that RTC have the right idea when they do the Cumbrian Mountains from London, electric haulage to Crewe or Carnforth then the steam section and the electric to get back to London. Why not also use this option for the trips on the ECML.
