Cathedrals Express to York on 3rd July

Have I missed something here, or is there really not a thread for this train yet?

I would have thought it quite an important day for some!

Times on UK Steam indicate comfortable seats will be needed. Although a quick glance shows an even time start to stop booking Doncaster - York?

But five and a half hours York -Kings Cross. OMG. On this day of all days. Oh well, plenty of time to talk about last Saturday and what might follow it.

Anyway, I imagine events at York will make it a good day out for those who use this train.

 

I'm booked on this, currently looking at my options to get to Kings Cross for 06:40! The timings do give us a lot of time in York which is good, but a 23:00 arrival is going to make for a very long day. Looking forward to seeing the A4's though!

 

Right time through Sandy on the slow this morning. More spotters than commuters! Plenty of Mallard 75 posters and pictures up in the Station too.

Heads up to those seeing the train North of Retford, we appear to have skipped our booked water stop at Carlton on Trent loop. Currently about 25 mins up.

Yep, back on the original schedule now! Think it was a faulty HST that caused us to be diverted via Doncaster RMT.

 

Only up North could you have place names like that!.

Visions of back to back terraces, tall smoking factory chimneys, open sewers and a young lad pushing a bike up a steep cobbled street hill delivering Hovis bread. And I wonder what Rossington drain looks like?

 

Looks at lot like any other drain which is why it is called a drain!!! Wise Northerners chose not to build any bothys thereabouts.

 

I believe the "Hovis" steep cobbled street advert was filmed in Shaftesbury,Dorset!

that most people assume to be in the Cotswolds is actually in Thornton-le-Dale, North Yorkshire.

All a bit confusing really.

 

I have met a number of fellow passengers over the years who told me they only booked on trips where their was a local pickup, and were definitely not prepared to travel into London. Some of the same people then moaned about the lack of variety of destinations on offer!

 

Yet another example why I have virtually given up timing now Al. There may be a few more trips I'll turn out for, but they need to have better schedules than this one. Some of the timings are amazing. Like the one you mentioned.

I know a 6.40 start from the Cross means there has to be a pick up point easily accessible by car etc, and with decent car parking some miles out of London. And also for later trains to cut out "via London travel" for those who don't want that. Plus "insurance" against a very late return following any delays. But wouldn't just one of those do each way on such trips?

But some gain of course from a train like todays. Like those who love listening to the loco noise from near the front of the train. Lots of restarts both ways. And with a 13 car train that could be quite good today!

 

Nearly caught me out having not stopped at Carlton loop running twenty minutes early when 60163 passed me at East Markham. Taken from the public footpath near the former East Markham sidings on the approach to Askham tunnel

Got up at 05:15 this morning to see this one. Apparently left London-King's Cross right time at 06:40 and passed me at New Southgate, the station that is so good they have re-named it 6 times, 1 minute early and going very nicely.

 

... and 70013 + support coach will be limited to 45mph max, due to lack of brake force (IIRC) whereas Tornado can run up to 75mph most of the time.
