Will this be the next casualty resulting from the GW steam ban? <BJ>

Since the ban is NR Western region, As a compromise, maybe they can do what they used to with VSOE trains to Bath & Bristol, i.e. steam from London to Westbury, then DL to Bristol. IIRC, this used to be done because of servicing arrangements.

Unlikely because the major fire started by Tangmere on Thursday was between Salisbury and Westbury.

As expected, it has now been confirmed (via Twitter) that this train will now be diesel hauled due to fire risk.

Expect the same fate to befall Tangmere as well on Thursday. It's absolutely bone-dry in the south at the moment.

There is currently no steam ban in Kent. Only total bans are Wessex and GW. However, this could change at any time. Steam operations are the responsibility of each individual NR route. What we all have to remember is that NR's principal responsibility is to the mainstream TOC's, and services. The people I have dealt with in NR are all sensible, pragmatic and considerate people. Nobody cancels steam operations willingly or lightly, but the conditions and risks have to be considered on a real time basis. Sometimes a ban is the only sensible and logical answer to the question. Other times it may mean Diesel assistance to reduce the load on the Steamer. We then move on to the other thorny issue, what do we do if steam is banned. Is the answer to just cancel the train, or Diesel haul it instead. Neither solution is good, but which is the favourite. I dare say that if you asked the paying punters, about 50% would vote for each option. I will now drop my head below the parapet, and await the expected onslaught. AT

    Why shouldn't you ask that?
Some of us don't have steam only blinkers on and like diesel, electric and steam motive power.
