Amidst the hundred or so standard & narrow gauge wagons on this list is a vehicle listed as 'Royal Coach'. This appears to be an observation saloon of some sort.
Does anybody know its origins ?

The RHC web-page (on the DfT website) says "The Committee also has the function of agreeing which institutions will hold those records or artefacts so designated when no longer required by the railway business that owns them, and the terms under which they will be offered to those institutions."

Presumably the sale will be subject to conditions agreed by the RHC, or in future the Science Museum Railway Heritage Designation Advisory Board which is due to take over the designation powers in 2013.

Nothing to do with the Bluebell Railway (which seems to like being a part of every thread on here...).

The 'Royal' coach, lot 22, along with lot 80 'passenger coach' (narrow gauge), have been withdrawn from the sale.

The complete tender list (not yet showing these withdrawals) is at 0213 Rolling Stock Rolling Stock Tender - Ramco UK Limited

No, nothing to do with the Bluebell. Though we did discuss the coach...

The coach in question was a clerestory-roofed LSWR dining saloon, then had its roof cut off and converted into a nondescript saloon in SR days, converted into a wartime ambulance car with a substantial re-arrangement of the bodyside and door openings, and finally converted into an MOD inspection saloon. Restoration back to LSWR form is probably out of the question bearing in mind the modifications it has had, so probably the best heritage outcome is to preserve it as an example of a Military Inspection Saloon; indeed, it is probably runnable like that more or less immediately.

The "Royal" connection is because it was used to transport the queen in the late 1970s on a visit to Bicester, I believe. A bit of cachet, but not exactly a coach that used to be part of the royal train.

Can anyone tell me where the ballast hoppers went, also any one of the flats from the last ramco sale. The L.C.L.R. vehicle trust would like to borrow / buy for future use in Lincolnshire.
    PM me if you want.

    Regards

    Peter
