I am looking for an original, in as new condition Southern Rail (Green) hat Totem.
I am willing to pay a fair price.

Also, I need a bit of information. Some hat totems appear to be enamel on brass (gold) while others are enamelled on what appears to be nickel (silver). Any reason for this? was one for footplate crew and one for Guard?

    Hello,

British Railways Southern Region Totems as with the other regions came in Guilt and Nickle as you have stated
BRITISH RAILWAYS in Guilt was for footplate crews.
Nickle was for Lower Grades, Signalmen and Shunters, some such as Porters had there grade in nickle

Higher Grades such as Foreman and Guards had there grade in Guilt
Station Masters and Inspectors had wire wound Oak leaf bands.

In conjunction with above Cycling lion badges were available and followed the same rules but included Station Masters and Inspectors.
Then later came the Fish Tail and Ferret and Dartboard.

One thing I have noticed and a few volunteers on a number of railways are guilty of is the combination of Cycling Lion badge and Totem this never happened although Totem and Ferret and Dartboard did.

Just to add as I forgot,

Nickle Guards badges were for Goods Guards

Good luck finding one of these, would suggest ebay or a specialist auction. You can spot a real one as they have a different fixing which has two tiny holes on each side of the badge (presumably for a wire) whereas the repro ones have two lugs on the back. Plenty of repro ones around so be careful! You can see what I mean here:
