Someone on the footplate of 48151 was deliberately waving an orange jacket out of the cab window to irritate the photographers. I believe this happened over several miles, not just on Beasdale.

A picture appeared in the Beano, attributed to Warrick Hunt.

Thanks Ralph. Strange at Kirkby Stephen - you could hear a very slow exhaust in the distance, then nothing followed by plenty of phone activity in the signal box until you could hear her restarting. I guess she must have stopped around Waitby area.

Reports suggest a 37 was sent from Carnforth to meet her at Preston and assist back via Lancaster.

Not sure what the worry is with the hi-vis top - my "happy snap" shows it being worn on the footplate. Is that frowned upon?

If memory serves correct the photographers had been annoying the owner by posting advice on web-sites about how he should operate his locomotives albeit in a way designed to improve the photographers' results. The result was that the owner decreed that running his engine was HIS responsibility and made the point to the lineside photographers by displaying a hi-viz vest in the cabside window to emphasize the point !

Not childish - more the loco owner stating who would control the running of the locomotioves in his fleet.

In that case anyone who takes internet forum comments so seriously really needs to get a life!

Well lets hope he never needs to go to the general enthusiast market to raise any funds for the loco or to fill the trains his loco hauls.

So if you buy a vintage vehicle then spend time and money restoring it before returning it to active service you would be quite happy for someone - especially someone who has contributed nothing in terms of time effort or finance - to tell you how to operate said vehicle ?

The owner concerned knows his market - and services it very well as it pays his bills; sadly the enthusiast contribution is a lot more sparse and ineffectual.

I think it occurred before the internet was particularly prevalent. The owner took umbrage at the number of requests for exhaust that were being made to the crews prior to departure from The Fort. I do think it was a rather childish way to get the point across, as if it was an issue, it would have been far more mature for the crews to simply have refused to take requests and have their palms crossed with silver. The photographers would soon get the message that it wasn't worth asking. It also wasn't just as innocently displayed as you might suggest; Mr Smith purposefully held the vest out of the cab with the clear intention of spoiling the photographers images, it wasn't just displayed in a cabside window.

The Fellsman image above appears to be completely different with a member of crew wearing a hi-vis jacket. While, it is good for the steam experience that many of the crews tend not to wear hi-vis on board, I can't see any reason to complain if they wish to do so. For those that think it spoils the steam era feel in their images, Photoshop can sort it in a matter of seconds. Was there more of an issue than the image by 30910 suggests?

It is a bit unusual for footplate staff to wear a full hi vis jacket rather than the normal clothes, when on the footplate, but obviously is a requirement when on the track.
It would be rather warm on the footplate with such a chunky jacket on as well, and if worn opened it can actually be a health and safety hazard, by catching on any controls, equipment, and really not ideal for a the fireman, an driver, who need freedom of movement in a confined space.
I would suspect the person is support crew, or could it be a fitter?
Would not think that it was done to upset photographers - it just happened.
