Photos of Galatea at Armathwaite both north and southbound. Great to see 45699 running on the S&C, despite the 47 tucked inside.

Video from yesterday of Galatea at Bamber Bridge, Horrocksford and Selside REDONE with sound added to the last clip:

First time I've tried fiddling with the sound track like this (forgot to turn the microphone on so ended with a silent track) so am still struggling with the ethics let alone the practicalities.

Don't worry about the ethics of dubbing different sound, Chris, everyone does it when they have to. It's not easy to be convincing, though. That's pretty good, and if I didn't know, I would not have thought about how well it fitted. Being really picky, the sound of the carriages passing runs out a bit before the picture does - you could perhaps fade the picture sooner, before the whole train has passed. Also, neither loco sounds like it's working hard, though there is a plume of exhaust from the 47 suggesting the driver has just opened it up a bit, and folks like you and I know that it's about 1-in-100 uphill at Selside.

Finding a clip of more-or-less the right type of loco running at the right speed (number of chuffs per minute, rather than mph), recorded from about the same distance (so the approach and "going-away" happen at about the right speed) can be very tricky. Some locos (Jubilee, Bulleid, K4, A4) have very distinctive sounds. Double-headers are particularly difficult, especially if there's a lot of whistling involved. Trains passing at speed are easier than starting away or pulling hard Imagine trying to patch the sound-track for 5043+46233 restarting from a station, each whistling in turn. Unless you could borrow the sound from someone else who was there at the time, preferably standing quite close to you, it would be a nightmare to reconstruct!

A useful trick is to convert the donor track to mono first, and reduce the volume by 6dB to compensate for 2 signals in the same track. You can leave it as mono in the final product, or pan the sound manually right at the end, once everything else is lined up.

Thanks for the helpful comments. Just sticking my toe in the water. I don't want to hijack this thread but noticed the length problem and wondered if it were possible to stretch the sound a little without altering the tone too much. I'll experiment in private to see what happens.

    Thanks again - Chris
