Could there be something to be said for having 5 or 29 semi-regularly banking trains up to Goathland? Costs more in coal in the short term, but reduces wear and tear on the medium size locos (particularly class 4 or there abouts) being flogged...

At the very least, 5820 seems not to be viewed that way on the Worth Valley. It's been overhauled ahead of quite a few far more Wilcock-friendly engines.

What is the sort of price that is being looked at?

    I know!

I have a picture of her somewhere in US transport livery shortly after she'd be used in the film The Yanks back in the early 80's :)

I'll see if I can dig it out....................................................

    Exactly. :)

Well, anything you can loudly insist is painted BR black or green and hung on the front of a rake of maroon Mk. 1s, and then stand on a platform taking photographs of while shouting at passengers and small children to get out of your way.

We all have our personal preferences about locos, liveries, and numbers of rivets. Now, what was this thread about again??

Oh, I don't know. I've always found him very catholic in his tastes - he likes both the unicycling lion and the ferret and dartboard eras...

There's a suggestion that the Churnet Valley's S160 6046 will be visiting the NYMR from August to October - that visit will probably either convince the MPD people that 2253 is worth keeping or that they are doing the right thing in getting rid of it!

Won't that leave the CVR a bit short of motive power?

Reported on the NYMR forum, but I don't know where it came from before that. It was supposed to be coming last year, which would have left the CVR in a similar motive power shortage, but wasn't ready in time. Doesn't look as though it'll be main line registered by August, though, so we won't find out if it is suitable for Whitby - at least, not on this visit!

Seeing as 2253 is and ex LNER loco and was allocated to Neville Hill not so far away from the NYMR, it probably has a more authentic claim to be on the line than Repton.

Yep, the post on that thread seems pretty definitive. With luck she'll behave well enough to ensure 2253's future on the line.

2253 aside, there aren't many surviving engines which worked over the NYMR before preservation. D345 did, and Barrow Hill's D2066 worked the last revenue earning freight from Malton to New Bridge. There's 2005, obviously, and 5428. The long boiler 0-6-0 at the NRM was a Malton engine, and 42085 was a Whitby engine. Can anybody think of any more?

3442/61994 did. OK, she was preserved, but the NYMR wasn't at the time...

This would be perfect for the Polar Express themed trains, wonder if that company would consider buying it!

TBH, if I was a weathly individual, this loco, although ugly, is a perfect purchase, for reasons stated here.
Also, the amount of 1940's railway events these days, it would be perfect for those too.
    I would buy it.
