What about Cheltenham assuming that you can move both it and Lord Nelson by rail.

Oh dear another tiresome I know something that you dont post.

Either put up or shut up, ie if you cant say then dont say anything in the first place and if you do know and can say then tell us all.

Posts like this do you and the forum no favours, unless you think you are a big man by being in the know.

4936 'Kinlet Hall' is the replacement loco for 70000. Steam Railway mag confirms it this month.

Ah a bit of western to contrast with the Southern visitors. Maybe 70000 will visit another year, it was due to visit in 2010 I remember.
In a way, it would be nice if this is the last Southern gala for awhile: 2 Autumns and a Spring gala on what is not its home territory feels enough for the moment.

Agreed - there does seem to have been an excessive amount of focus on the Southern

Nothing wrong with focussing on the Southern. Hopefully they'll have a Spamcanfest in due course.

It would be nice to see another LNER loco for the teaks, we had 60007, 60163, 1744, 61994 all within a year of each other and it's been quiet for the last 3 years now, baring 4492's 2012 visit and ok 1744 and 60163 have made return visits but a new engine or one not seen for some time, something like 61306 (particularly!) or 62005, would be very welcome I'm sure.

Makes up for all the galas that had no southern then! I've been going to every Autumn gala since 2006 (excluding 2007 as work wouldn't allow me) and there wasn't a southern locomotive until 2010 which was 34070. Makes a change to see a few engines of my interest at one of the main highlight events of the year.

I'd like to think the B12 may make a visit in the next couple of years!

With regards to this years lineup, it's reasonable, very gutted the rumours on 30053 turned out to be just rumours, not seen her run since i was a child! Usually the SVR Autumn galas have something i've never seen running attend but of course the more i go to these events the less this is going to happen! Will be different to see 850 somewhere new and to see Met No. 1 is always a treat.

Did the Nelsons and King Arthurs run into GWR regions like DN&S back in steam days?

I think the Arthurs were pretty common as far north as Banbury (via Basingstoke / Reading / Didcot / Oxford) on north to south services, where they would hand over to GW locos.

Southern engines were also common on the Salisbury - Westbury line, though generally smaller locos such as the moguls. Southern engines also regularly worked along the GWR Exeter - Plymouth line via the coast (and GWR locos worked over the Southern Exeter - Plymouth line via Okehampton). That was to enable the respective crews to maintain route knowledge of each other's line, so that, in the event of closure of one line or the other (typically storms on the GW line; and snow on the SR line), diversionary services could be run without recourse to pilotmen. I think there was one SR service per day each way along the GWR line, and one GWR service per day along the SR line.

I'm not sure the Nelson's travelled very regularly off the Southern: there weren't many of them and they tended to remain limited to a small number of routes. I'm sure someone will be able to find a picture of them off territory, but I don't think it was very common (I stand to be corrected though!)

Problem with Southern loco's on the SVR is they are just about the only region there's no matching stock for, you can get away with a BR Liveried Bulleid on the Mk1's, but Southern Malachite does stick out a bit.

While reading your post, I have a very nice mid-1930s photo in front of me of Maunsell mogul 1625 in full green livery on a rake of seven chocolate and cream GWR coaches, passing a GW lower-quadrant signal, and earlier today I was looking at a mid-1940s photo of a mogul in Bulleid livery on a rake of seven or eight LNER teak coaches. (And I'm sure SR locos and LMS coaches must have mixed around Bournemouth).

Now, I wonder which preserved line could put together rakes of GWR, LNER and LMS coaches to run with a hired in SR mogul and replicate those photos? :)

I am sure I have seen a photo of a Lord Nelson at Oxford Southbound in BR days but I think they were mainly confined to Bournemouth line and Southampton Boat trains for most of their Southern Railway life.
King Arthur's were more common North of Basingstoke but not on the Didcot Newbury and Southampton line AFAIK!
I think that if they were in BR livery they would be a much easier match to the Valley.
It still be great to see them both although the last time on the Valley Sir Lamiel was in early Southern Green without smoke deflectors so different this time!
Never in all my long time gricing seen the big machine Lord Nelson in action so looking forward to it!!
