Yes I am sticking up for them....even though I think that for whatever reason the wrong decision was made.
Working in the Control is a thankless task.
.....and yes I was...upto a few months ago.....

Last weekend the Torbay had Nunney with a 47 inside. This was a DBS worked train. The Weymouth is a WCRC worked train. Is there an issue here about how the two companies crew their trains?

If you look at realtimetrains, the tour was originally due into Weymouth at 1122. It's now predicting a 1240 arrival.
The LE was due 1200 from Weymouth Jersey Siding, 1323 at Yeovil Junction. 1518 from Yeovil Junction to Weymouth Jersey Siding at 1633 for 1700 back from Weymouth.
There's not a lot of paths from Weymouth to Yeovil. Could there have been a path from Weymouth to Yeovil around 1300? Even if there was, could the loco still have been serviced in half the time?
One of my top 3 delays on a railtour was because of pathing problems between Weymouth and Yeovil. 12/10/96, the LSWR "Bert Hooker Memorial" ended up leaving Weymouth after 10pm and terminating at Clapham Junction well into the silly hours.

No I would have made a better one, based on common sense. Maybe put the 33 on the back, allow the tour outwards on steam power and diesel back.

And would you have taken the rap if 5029 had shut the GWML between Bristol and Bath for several hours due to a lineside fire? You only have to look at the video to see how dry the grass and crops are around there. Despite overnight rain and thunderstorms, the grass in my back garden is bone dry still.

As bean-counter says, we need sustained rain, not these storms. The rain is soaking into the soil, but has only just started being sucked up by the plants yet. The roadsides around here are full of two-tone long grass, bottom few inches is green but the rest is yellow and dry.

Go and have a look, I have - its yellow but its not dry. As an experiment, I have even gone out in the garden and tried to light some of this "yellow dry grass" - it wont burn.

Based on the actual conditions on the ground, it was a poor decision.

Arrived Weymouth 80 late. Sighs of relief all round.

Not your call to make, and based on your decision to get up in the middle of the night to drive 100 miles to go stand in a field knowing full well there was a fairly good chance of some diesel involvement in this trip then you ain't exactly impressing me with your decision making skills.....

I wonder why a decision on a train running from Bristol to Weymouth would be made on the condition of the grass in your garden in West Byfleet?

My guess is that the decision to run with a diesel was made on Friday. I doubt that the people at NR who make these decisions work on Sunday mornings!

I think the colour of the grass in robbos video may be a clue as to why people are being cautious.

No. It's to save time running back from Weymouth for servicing.

If it's too dry still, fine, less than ideal but understandable, what's unacceptable however is the last minute fannying about at Bristol and Yeovil considering the train could of gone ahead with the Diesel doing the work in the formation originally presented, all NR have done their is put the train out of path causing delay minutes and lost passengers an hour of their day out in Weymouth.

P**s poor show by whoever's calling the shots in that area, if it's too dry then just tell the 33 to do the work, waste of everybody's time playing musical chairs with the loco's.

I assumed the Network rail controllers had some common sense, clearly as you say, I was mistaken. Nice to see you resorting to personal insults, give us a good insight into your debating skills too.

The decision to put the diesel on the front was made TODAY at nigh on departure time contrary to an earlier decision to put it on the back as insurance.

I am not the one making clueless statements about something you have no total overview of. Someone made a decision, you don't like it, and you were not even travelling on the train. Tough.
The condition of your West Byfleet grasslands have no relevance to the operation of the train today.
