Is that the NYMR value of the loco, or a value from an independent source?

The owner of 6046 has stated a desire to get his engine registered for mainline running. Hopefully, by the time 2253 is overhauled he will have achieved that and the precedent will be established. I hope that 6046's imminent visit will convince some of the doubters at the NYMR that a properly overhauled and anglicised S160 would be an asset to the railway. Although I understand the accountancy motives behind purchasing the engine I think it would be money down the drain to dispose of it at a knock-down price.

Isn't much of a technical reason why an S160 can't be mainline approved, the fact they only worked briefly on the UK national network previously is largely irrelevant in 2013, what is more relevant is I can't see them being approved for in excess of 50MPH, not a problem to Whitby, but rather limits where you can go.

Its like a super 8F really, will be rated for the same speed but carries an extra 1500 gallons of water and is dual braked!

So are they balanced the same as an 8F* then?

The S160's were specially balanced where the front 2 sets of driving wheels are sprung independently from the rear 2, you effectively have a 2 - 4 - 4- 0.

6046 rides extremely well, we have also reduced the side play between the axlebox horse shoes and the thrust faces on the driving wheels to reduce any "waggle" at higher speeds.

Reading the thread under the heritage section, 6046 should have arrived from churnet and likely to be in service shortly, no doubt her performance should clearly demonstrate what should have not been left for scrap in these years and I wonder how much longer before the WD time is officially up?

Now maybe we will get some more people in favour of getting the resident S160 and Vera back in service.

A couple of clarifications plse Chris. Are the 'horseshoes' the same thing as horn guides? I'm not clear about the springing either, most loco's are independently sprung per axle, unless they have compensated springing?

Perhaps horeshoes is the terminology terminology used for the same component in conjunction with barframes as opposed to plate frames, and the springing is compensated in pairs... but not fully ? There's certainly tuning up potential with this design which in common with other austerity types has a big firebox in relation to the boiler to accomodate crap fuel...

Apparently in part exchange for some other NYMR-based rolling stock which he owned, including the Mk.1 disabled saloon and a couple of milk tanks.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but I saw these pics on Locomotion's facebook page, 2253 now cosmetically restored and on display with the wartime train exhibit.

Looking a lot different to the last time I saw 2253 - massive credit to all involved with the cosmetic restoration looks stunning!

It's a rotten shame (pun intended) that it ever got into the condition it was in before now

The Crusader looks good too. Is it sectioned or is that just a panel removed to show off the Christie suspension?

Looks amazing, like how I remember her when I was on holiday in Yorkshire. Any ideas as to her long term future.
