I see this train is adverised as being 60009 both ways (as far as York on the return). It seems to be advertised as steam both directions every year, but has it actually ever run with steam both ways? What chance of it doing so this year?

This is an old chestnut, it would seem these days that NR allow their contractors to get a way with work not being done to the required specification. Bridges that have been in gauge for most steam suddenly being out of gauge because track has been reballasted but not returned to the same position as before, but since the regular service trains are still cleared then the fact that steam is not seems to be cosidered as not important. In true private industry if a contractor did things like that they would have correct the errors promptly or be billed if someone else had to correct it.

When was the last time 60007 actually ran a mainline tour ?
I've looked at the Tynesider as a potential trip the last few years but its never turned out.
I guess this year RTC's playing a safer card and using 60009 instead.

Last Steam out of Cannon Street was I believe 4/11/06 34067 to Dungeness but on the return it only went to London Bridge. Only 1 loco.

I would put my money, not with RTC ,but on the tour running with 60009 to KX with PD class behind the loco, and returning with cattle class listening to the strumming duff on the front.
Wouldn't mind doing if had faith in RTC delivering per the brochure, but history suggests....and 60009 is the following week working out of Anglia.

Only steam both ways in 2010. 60007 on the up, and 60019 on the down as far a York.

Get the same story every year, as somebody mentions 2010, was the only time we got it both ways, 60019, was needed in York, and using it on the return benefitted all parties.
As mentioned elsewhere, one way only, duffage back home I would suspect....

Sadly, that's what I too am expecting, hence my lack of booking. Hasn't it been advertised as steam both ways for about 5 years? Similarly, I'd like to do the steam out of Cannon Street on November 9th, but I don't want to book advance tickets to London and non-cancellable hotels only to find it could be postponed or cancelled.

Network Rail have still to check if Tornado will fit the gauging of the line between Hurst Green and East Grinstead . The A1 Steam Trust wanted to use the Bluebell's wheel drop in July, but are using the Midhants one instead.

When Past Time proposed a trip 6 years ago - Uckfield and East Grinstead branches there was a gauging issue with 34067 south of Hurst Green. The Past Time trip was cancelled since 34067 was required on Torbays and the RTC trip with 45407 at month later only went to Uckfield.

If you do book make sure you get tickets. Our Weymouth trip was notable in part for having no tickets arrive. What's more we weren't even on the seating plan. Thankfully the trip wasn't quite sold out and the train manager managed to accommodate us. Sadly our letter of complaint has been ignored so far. Not a good way to treat customers past, present or future.

Looks like that might not be a problem anymore, from email received from RTC a couple of days ago:

    E-tickets:
Please note that we will in future be using e-tickets for all passengers whom we have an email address for on our daytrips, to speed up delivery and save on paper! These should usually be with you about 5 days before travel.

A bad idea. To save on paper, but to make you print them out and waste your paper.

You do not have to print them. I forward them to my 3G phone.

Steam Dreams have been using e-tickets for some time, although I believe they still sent out tickets to those who want them.

Next years Winter Cumbrians, and Tin Bath now on the website.

60009 or 45305 for the former ( was hoping for 46115 or 45699)

And on the matter of some locos being limited to particular routes, it seems that common sense has prevailed on the RTC West Highlander. For some time now there has been talk of 46115 going to Fort William and the RTC publicity still shows that as happening. All the informed wisdom on this site has consistently said that this is a non starter on any number of levels. According to UK Steam, the Glasgow to FW leg will now be 61994. So another piece of creative writing bites the dust.
